1st off, hello everyone I'm new to forum but have been lurking for awhile. I bought a back up vehicle for my wife to drive in the snow. Its a 2004 Libby renegade. Got taking to the cleaners by used car dealer. Anyhow, 2 weeks after purchase the 42RLE went to crap. Have a remanufactured on the way. Dealer keeps giving me 5/16 bolts for torque converter and the ones I took out have 11/16 heads. They are even using my VIN# and still insist on 5/16 being correct. After days of searching online parts and calling dealers I'm giving up. They keep saying the 2004 bolts are discontinued and look a few years ahead and say they will work. Can anyone here tell me the size the 4 bolts are and where to get them are what year KJ to look for them under? Thanks ahead

Are the originals damaged? I've never replaced the bolts on any trans jobs I've done.

They put a junk yard ****** in and only put 2 bolts in. But I always replace any bolts of this type.

Did they put the right two bolts in? I don't remember the exact size when I pulled my 02 engine but that was a 45RFE. I do think 5/16 seems small. They are a high grade bolt and only torqued to around 25 or so lb/ft, maybe that's right? Someone out there must know.

The 2 in there fit perfect. They have 10.9 on the heads so there metric, but 18mm was to big 17 to small. A 11/16 fit it perfect. The dealer gave me grade 8 5/16 bolts. I have emailed several transmission places and so on and cannot get an answer. Its crazy.

That's interesting. I thought mine just had the 6 dashes on the heads indicating a grade 8. I'm almost positive and I was the only one to mess with them on my departed 02.

Sorry; I didn't keep a record of what those bolts were when I replaced my trans (and I can't remember what size they were). I have one pic with the flywheel and torque converter bolted up, but that just shows the head. It has a symbol and 10.9 on the head.

EDIT: RockAuto claims they're this:
DORMAN 14040 Torque Converter Bolts; M10-1.50 x 15mm Class 9.8

Thanks for the info and links. That's the exact same bolt as mine in your photo. I know some people re-use bolts in high stress situations but its something I refuse to do. Never have re-used ring gear bolts are flywheel bolts and such. There is absolutely no way to no if there is a fracture are the bolt is ready to fail. Its only the cost of a few new bolts for a piece of mind. I am gonna go to a different Jeep dealer Monday on the way to pick up the ****** and see if they offer any new information. There has to be a way to get them somewhere. Thanks again for the reply

10.9 on the bolt head indicates its rated tensile strength.. in case anyone was wondering. 10.9 is roughly 150,000 psi.

Also have never replaced torque converter or flywheel mounting bolts just because it was apart. If they are not damaged, reuse. You don't typically replace the high stress bolts or nuts on the suspension when it is apart... if the FSM does not specify that it is required for some reason, you may be giving yourself grief over your own preferences for something completely unnecessary, seeing as how these bolts for the '04 are apparently as rare as hens teeth (outside of a running, driving 2004 MY.

I have seen simple questions on these forums turn into mines bigger contest so many times so not gonna even get into the difference in suspension bolts versus a manual clutch to flywheel bolt or an automatic torque converter to flexplate bolt difference. I learned from the best, my dad God rest his soul... He was master mechanic for 40 years and I learned from him if its easy to get to don't worry if bolt is in good shape but if it involves high stress and hard to get to why chance a catastrophic failure for the price of a few bolts not to mention your reputation as a mechanic. Just my way of doing things don't care what other people do and not my place to convince them to do it my way. If someone wants to risk it and redo all that work for $20 worth of bolts...so be it.

I do not have all the bolts. If I did and absolutely exhausted all possibilities and could not get them I would have no choice but to reuse them.

Do whatever you'd like CC. No one is arguing that you can't or shouldn't replace them, only stating that it is not required.

That's all, best of luck in your search for the fasteners.
