does the 2.4l really have 4.10 in the rear axle? there's a sh*t-load of cash for clunker kjs in the junk yard. thinking i could at least re-gear the rear for cheap

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
damn. and im guessing the 2.4 wouldnt have that up front?
If it's 4wd it will have matching 4.10 geared front and rear diffs.

BUT........................................

Be weary since some of the '02-'03 2.4 KJ's came with the D35 rear diff, you do not want the D35 in the rear.If the rear diff has a flat bottom it's a 8.25,if it has a rounded bottom it's a D35 and stay away from those.

No dude, If your front WAS 4.10, then the rear diff also HAS to be 4.10, and according to the chart, it is 4.1:

AXLE RATIOS
2.4-liter I-4 - 4.1
3.7-liter V-6 Auto - 3.73
3.7-liter V-6 Manual - 3.55
2.8-liter Diesel Auto - 3.73
2.8-liter Diesel Manual - 3.55

3.7-liter V-6(KK) auto - 3.73
3.7-liter V-6(KK) 6 speed manual('08 only) - 3.21
2.8-liter Diesel Auto - 3.73
2.8-liter Diesel Manual - 3.55
Fixed some of it for you.

Oh and of course if your KJ came with 4.10's in one diff the otehr would come with 4.10's from the factory. But actually the 4.10's for the front KJ diffs are actually not 4.10's,they are actually 4.09's.All true 4wd vehicles are geared like that with the front being slightly geared higher so when in 4wd the front wheels pull you more and keep the rear end from coming around. That is aslo the reason why you get binding in part time 4wd on dry surfaces.

Whats wrong with D35? and i'm gonna go to the junkyard this weekend and see what they have to offer. I have the 3.7l with 3.73 front and rear with 32" tires so gas isn't staying in the tank very long. figured junk yeard axles would be cheaper than buying ring and pinion plus install. Which is i guess like $2000

Fixed some of it for you..

You do know, from MATH class (you did take math, and PASS, right?), that ZEROS after a number to the RIGHT of a decimal point, like in 4.10, the 0 is unnecessary? 4.1 is the EXACTLY same as 4.10, the Zero is not required. Sorry, that is 100% true, so that FIX was not needed.

If you count the axle RATIO, you can say, 4.1 or 4.10, they are both correct. You can have 4.10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

It is still, 4.1!

People not familiar with proper gear ratio labellings can get confused. In the automotive industry you use 4.10's and not 4.1's,gets to confusing since some will confuse 4.1 with 4:1.

Confuse 4:1 to 4.1? Maybe, though one is a colon, one is a period. If people confuse a ":" over ".", then it is also time to go back to school for basic punctuation...

Allpar is a great site for information, they have it as 4.1 - when you speak you can say "Four-ten" but writing it as 4.10 is fine, but 4.1 is literally correct.

Do most 2.4l's have the d35 in the back? or would it just be a handful of them? and also same question for a 2.4l 4wd. did they make them? might sound ignorant but yeah..

I do not think they (2.4L 4 cyl gasser) were that common. They were available in 02-05 MY and then discontinued.

I would just look for a D30a from a 2.4L C8.25 gears are only $150 plus overhaul kit, its really the D30a that would kill you on a re-gear not the 8.25
