i do it by opening it through paint, and resizing it there. thanks for the info!

Paint is the worst way to go with jpegs and resizing.
Go ahead and get irfanview, it is fast and very easy to use, plus you can set resize quality/compression with jpg when saving.

it is driving me crazy, it runs perfectly fine on every one of the old workstations we have at work, but not on my laptop.
I am not sure GAIM has something to do with it, might be the GTK+ version, but I let that go, I am running paint.net from now on... [-(
