First off please excuse my ignorance, I admittedly know very little about vehicles. So my transmission has been acting up. I'm searching for a new one now but have a few questions about what i need. I have an 05 Liberty Renegade with an automatic transmission (Not sure if they made them with manuals but just giving you the info i have). I did a little research, and I found on the Wiki page for the liberty that the 5 speed automatic trans model number (not sure if that is the correct terminology) is the 545RFE for the 3.7 engine. Am i reading this right or am i misunderstanding something somewhere? I thought my transmission was a 5 speed or is it a 4 speed? I thought i read that the four speed auto trans was used in the 2.4 engine. Is there more than 1 transmission type for the renegades that year? I'd appreciate any help you guys could offer, this has been such a nightmare. This is my second transmission in a year, thankfully the first one was under warranty through the dealership i bought it from but the garage put in a rebuilt transmission that has given my nothing but problems since. The shop has already replaced my torque converter, unfortunately with another rebuilt one, since the install was still under warranty. I am no longer under warranty and am 5 hours from home on vacation needing a new trans and have to be back to work Tuesday. I found a junk yard that has four different transmissions from libertys but i need to know which one is what i need for my libby.

Awesome, thank you for your quick response. I guess I still have a lot of learning to do, haha.

Yep, 42RLE 4-spd auto. Just finished putting a used one with 50,000 miles on it in mine.

What kind of trouble are you having with it? Did the shop put ATF+4 in it and did they perform the Quick Learn procedure required when changing the transmission?

If you are anywhere near Wilmington, NC I can do the quick learn for you.

Oh, and you should have the 42RLE with 3 electrical connectors on the left side. If you slide under your truck on the driver's side, you can count the electrical connections as they're easy to see, all 3 together.

But I still want to know what fluid they put in and whether they did the Quick Learn procedure.

Well, shit...I think it was the 4 connector. The person at the junkyard mentioned that and I think the mechanic told them 4 connector. They pulled the transmission out of an 07 or 08 nitro. What is the quick learn? Also ATF+4? And no, I was in the Pittsburgh, PA area.

ATF 4 is the only transmission fluid that you can use
Quick learn is where the Dealership goes in and sits the trans up to run correctly
in simple terms . Other wise it will shift erratically, could be harder shifts etc until it relearns everything

If the mechanic told them 4 connector, that must be what you have (I have 3 on the left, one on the right, for a total of 4 connectors, but most places ask how many you have on the left).

What Tom said on the quick learn; it can be done only by the dealer scan tool or by a high-end (I mean $1000 +) scan tool the better shops have.

Quick learn resets the CVI (clutch value index) in the trans. Requirement for electronic transmissions when you replace one or get it rebuilt so that the computer knows what it is.
