I have a 3 mounth old baby and need to disable the front passenger air bag. As the baby chair is not alouded in the front I feel there is more chance for an accidete with my wife looking for the dummy for the child in the back seat while driving than having the car chair strapted in the front seat with no air bags. Does any one know how to disable them without a tripp to the dealer. I have tried the trip to the dealer but he has refused to disable them as they are a safety feature.
Thanks
Ronald

if i'm not mistaken, it's against the law to disable factory airbag system. and its not wise to seat a 3 yr old in the front seat

Keep in mind he is in South Africa, laws might be different down there.

I also dont think its a very good idea myself however.

I thought the airbags in the KJ were weight sensative....meaning if you get into a wreck, and theres enough weight in the front seat, the passenger airbag will go off, and if nobody's there, it will not go off.....i swear i read that somewhere.

The sensors are deffinetly there, although I have no knowledge of their function.

Heres a picture of the passenger seat.
(sensor wiring harness in red circle and leads to seat in rectangle.)

I don't know if it's the same for all Liberties globally but I am under the impression that they all have the sensors in the front passenger seat that will turn it off the airbag if a certian weight is on the seat and it is active if there is enough weight (that of an adult). If I put my camera bag (about 20lbs) on the seat that little light on the hand bar comes on telling me the airbag is off. Even my 12 inch PowerBook G4 on the seat deactivates the airbag. I believe it is also off if there is no weight.

But I still think it is very dangerous to put a child in the front seat because computers aren't 100% reliable.

The passenger occupation sensors are only in '04s and up.

My 12" powerbook also disabled the airbag! lol3.gif Of course that light went off when I had to make a panic stop one day... someone took off in front of me like an idiot, bounced off of the dashboard and back on the seat, fell on the floor. Poor thing.

I like to keep my lappy in the "incase" computer bag to keep it from sliding around and getting too banged up.

That was just a little bit UNDER a year ago. I was looking at the mapquest directions that I left on the screen. It was out of the case.... oh boy. My printer stopped working and I was too lazy to write the directions down. I was looking for the directions to campus so I could register for classes. I had never been to the campus before, but I had been to the football field previously.

I didn't notice the dents until like February '06, lol.

I also do not think that its a good idea to disable the airbag(s). I do however feel that the weight of the baby/baby seat will disable the airbag for the passenger side. Careful looking to disable the bag, you could accidently trip something and *BOOM*. (whistle)

I wish we did have some sort of light for the pass. airbag...that would be a very nice feature that should be STANDARD on ALL vehicles.

actually my wrangler had a slot to put the key in and turn off the passenger airbag. Come to think about it so did my ex's S-10.

It does as of MY 2006. As of now I hate it. However, I may change my opinion in the wintertime when the roads are covered in ice.

airbags kill

its actually pretty simple to disable airbags for drivers side pull the plastic off bottom of dash and steer column look for a yellow jacketed wire with a locked connector unplug it as for the passenger side glovebox removal may be required to gain access to a similar connector mentioned above you air bag light will now be on this can be fixed by covering it with black tape or removing dash panel and discarding bulb AIRBAGS ARE DANGEROUS DISCONNECT BATTERY FIRST an airbag is nothing more then a sodium based directional explosive charge aka a bomb 16 inches from your face they should be outlawed they kill more children than school shootings put some steel back into a vehicle if you want saftey

Get mirrors. Put one on the back seat and the other near the rear view mirror and align them so the baby's face can be seen. Have this setup in my jeep and it works good.

EDIT. Yea I didnt realize the time stamp on previous posts. I wondering what tommudd ment by 9 years later. Long day at work...

either way get mirrors lol.
