I was browsing craigslist and found a 2003 KJ with 194k 3.7 auto 4WD for $900 at one of those buy here finance here places. It was just listed an hour ago and only 10 mins away so I went to take a look at it at a possible winter Jeep for my other half.

I am usually leary of these kind of places but the guy was very honest about the Jeep, they just got it in as a trade and haven't done a thing to it, and actually showed me things that were wrong with it.

It starts right up but has a CEL for P0118 & P01296.
Under the hood it has some strange wiring that has been cut to the electric fan, looks like they ran it to a switch then just cut their crappy wiring job, as well some spliced wiring to the alternator and MAP sensor (I think)

Also the 4WD makes a pretty good clunking noise when engaged, possibly due to a CV Joint up front that the boot is all torn up or the front driveshaft that has a good amount of play...

Body wise, it has some rust but nothing unusual for north east ohio.

I am just trying to get some opinions if I should pull the trigger on this, with the 4WD noise and wiring problems under the hood which are kinda scaring me off.. Usually though its hard to find a running driving Jeep for $900, am an use to seeing the ones needing a motor for $1500..

Wish I could find that deal closer to me. A buddy has a 03 and with my 04 it would be nice just to have one as a parts donor.

Don't think you can go to far off the mark for only $900

You have got to be kidding me. $900?

My first jeep had a completely rusted out body*, tail gate, and lift gate. Rocker knocking in the heads and piratically bald tires and the bearings in most of the U-joins were gone...for $900...in 1997, so with inflation over the past 17 years, that would be like $1,500 today.

*tin foil and road signs were used to keep your feet from falling though to the pavement below.

I would go for it personally.

$900 bucks & some parts/TLC will get ya another kJ rolling for winter!
Ok so a coolant temp sensor & P1296 is that a MAF problem?
AS long as the transmission is good and it rolls I cant image getting anything else cheaper?
Gosh I think I spent $900 in beer /smokes in the last month! :icon_lol: :party52:

Well I knew it would be gone quick. Some things came up early in the morning and the Jeep was gone within an hour of them opening..

If I didn't just buy the house, I would of had the time to tinker with it and bought it in a heartbeat..

Oh well, hopefully when the next deal comes up I will be ready..

Too bad you missed this one, but just having gone through the process of considering it will make you better prepared for the next opportunity. You'll know when it's "right" :)
