Falken High Country A/T?

Falken High Country A/T. UPDATED

UPDATE 2: June 11, 2010. approx 10,000 Miles

I've had the Falken High Country set on for about 10,000 miles now. They seem to be wearing really well. I've had them in a couple of muddy situations and they've done EXTREMELY well. When I first put them on we had a couple light snows and they did really well there too. As far as in the rain they do just fine it seems. No spin or ESP kicking in unless you really hammer down.

There's two complaints I have with them at this point:

1) Minor. Once they got 4-5K on them and started to break in they got pretty noisy. I don't really see this as a big deal. If I wanted quiet tires I would have stuck with highway tires. But they are noisier than other A/T tires I've had.

2) MPG. Wow, have they really cut into my MPG! I was consistently getting 23 highway with the stock GY tires. These are getting me 16-17 tops. I really expected the mileage to drop, but not that much. When I first put them on the mileage wasn't much different. But the drop in mileage seemed to be equal to the noise. As they got noisier, the mileage went down.



UPDATE: I went ahead and got a set of these in 245/75/16 for my Libby a few days ago. So far I'm totally impressed with these tires.

Since they're a bit more aggressive in the tread than most A/T's I expected them to be noisy, but they're really not. They're pretty quiet.

We got a very light snow night before last which usually turns my neighborhood streets pretty slick. The hill I had trouble going up in 4WD a week or so ago in the same type condition, I went up in 2WD without barely any slippage. Even when you feel the tire breaking loose a little it was still pulling.

Haven't had a chance to get them offroad yet.

Anyone using these?

I went to the tire dealer today to get some Firestone Dest. A/T's and they're sold out in every size that would fit. They were trying to push me off on some Dayton's, but I didn't like them at all. The sidewall seemed really flimsy, and it looked/felt more like a highway tire. I looked at these Falken's and they look pretty good. The price is nice and they're rated better than the Firestone at 1010tires.com. And... they have them in stock in 245/70/16. I'm VERY tempted since we've got some snow moving in tonight and I can NOT stand another mile on these ST's!

Looks really nice, almost like a Nitto AT.

Comes in my size as well...hmmmm....

I had Falken street tires on my previous car, and they were sweet. I know they are nothing like these, but from my experience, Falken makes nice tires. I know the ricer tuner guys run Falkens a lot, FWIW.

Falken is a division of Sumitomo - which probably doesn't help much - they're not well known either.

The very very early Falkens from the late 90s/early 00s, SOME were manufactured by Sumitomo.

Would not put Falkens on a wheelbarrow.

Have you owned some that turned out to be junk?

I haven't settled on any tires yet, but nobody around town seems to have much of anything decent in a 245/70 or 235/75.

I was looking at these as well. I run falken tires on my two other cars and would not switch to any other tire. Never any problems ever. So why are the tires no good.

ThunderbirdJunkie, as a former tire guy, has lots of experience with none of Falken's tires living up to their promises for performance and/or longevity.

As far as off road tyres or A/T tyres...

Couldn't tell you!

Let us know what you think of them in a long term test.
Then we will get a god idea of how they are from your point of view.

Increasing noise and decreasing mpg would indicate that the shoulders are "feathering." You might want to look into an alignment and rotation. Just a thought.

Or lack of rotation.
If he hasn't rotated his tires that would definitely cause it.

An alignment was done (checked good) in March. And they've been rotated... second rotation today. I may have the alignment checked again though. Thanks for the heads up.

Maybe rotate them more often, I do mine every 3 to 4000 miles and never have wear issues or noise like some have
