Overheated today

Towing my 5x8 single axle V-nose box trailer (maybe 1000 lbs). with maybe 500 lbs in the trailer.
running down the road at 55mph AC on, maybe 80 outside, mild hills. about 12 miles down the road the dash starting "dinging" and I discover that the temp gauge is pushing near the top of the gauge.

I shut off the AC and pulled over, cooling fan was on, I put trans in N and temps went back down.
I went about 2 more miles pulled into gas station to get water. Once I could open system it was only down 1/2 gallon but the LS top of radiator split :( ******* out pretty good.

I have had problems with temp rising pulling this trailer in the past using OD, and I forgot to lockout OD. maybe that was the cause. But after leaving gas station (now OD locked out, and AC off) the temps swung pretty bad. 1/2 to 3/4. but than all of a sudden leveled out (like thermostat was stuck)

A couple weeks ago I did put a non Jeep thermostat in it when I was installing an AC delco water pump and belt tensioner.

After about 2 hours down time to unload and setup furniture I returned home but I kept OD locked out and it never pulled over 1/2 way. a couple miles before home I switched to OD on and temps started to rise again so maybe the trans heat is causing this.

but the way the temps swing after this happened I believe the thermostat might have stuck than opened.
The aftermarket thermo is coming out and Jeep going back in when I replace the radiator.

So now I also need a radiator. I see the alu one on Ebay for around $70
I see Murry at oreilly is like $160.
advanced is 150 with lifetime warranty
autozone 160 with lifetime
Rock wants $232 for Mopar
rock has the denso (heart next to it) for $95.
I seem to remember saying Mishimoto, they are 96 on amazon

what do you recommend?

This jeep sits a lot in a storage lot (with 50w solar on it). But I need it to tow my boat
(new boat that I just ordered. The boat and trailer is 2200 lbs
from storage to lake is 3.5 miles so I think the jeep can do this :)

last question, would an aftermarket fan in front of radiator help? maybe a switch under dash to turn it on when towing?

Always tow with OD on,
I've had friends who tried to tow without switching OD on and had similar issues
Plus the fact non Mopar thermostat
Those cheap radiators are cheap for a reason

so why does the temps climb with Overdrive turned ON at 55mpg, and they stay normal when towing same load with overdrive off at 55mph
I think the converter is still locked at times with OD off, just the engine runs at 2300rpm instead of 1500rpm @ 55mph.

I agree I don't like the aftermarket thermo.
Also the temp rise with OD on and towing this trailer is the same with both the factory water pump and the current Acdelco pump so I don't think its the pump

Maybe the radiator is becoming clogged. but not that the tank is split at top its got get replaced.

Ive always towed with O/D off and yes, the torque converter will still lock with O/D off. It actually locks a bit earlier, which is pretty annoying, but I assume they did it to keep down trans temps. Ive had it lock in 2nd gear too, but only when it was really hot out.

Get a mopar rad and stat.

If your trans is overheating, you will get a trans temp light on.

has anybody had good luck with any radiator besides the Jeep sells?
I am going to storage yard to look, but I seem to recall in my 2006 the auto trans does not use the radiator cooling connectors, it only uses the cooler in front of the radiator.

I did not get the trans overheat light. I know the original owner did once because I saw the work order from dealer. "trans temp light came on running down highway.
they serviced the trans and installed a new belt that drives waterpump

Pretty sure only 2002 and early 2003 had the trans cooler in the radiator. All others got the aux cooler infront of the condenser.

so does that mean for mine (not using radiator cooler) the radiator without the builtin cooler (manual trans) will work?

Cant say for certain, but rock auto shows this for the mopar rad:

FitsAir Conditioning; Exc. Heavy Duty Cooling; Automatic Trans.
orAir Conditioning; Heavy Duty Cooling; Manual Trans. (Only 1 Remaining)

and the jeep thermostat is $43 bucks :0

What would you pick?

i think only those w/ the 45RFE has the in-rad ****** cooler. the 42rfe has a separate standalone cooler.

So far I have ordered the following parts
1 thermostat, Jeep
1 thermostat housing, jeep (I figure this plastic part is the same age as the radiator which split open)
upper and lower hoses, gates
Zerex G05

Monday I will order radiator. leaning towards Mishimoto
Still left to go, radiator cap based on pressure Mishimoto suggest on phone on Monday

So what are they trying to get you to switch to ?

nobody has recommended any radiator accept Mopar, but Mopar is not available. (and it it was, I can by almost 4 aftermarket for the price of one Mopar)
I have heard of Misimoto from the hot rod people and other jeep guys . the only other thing I have is amazon reviews which are all done the day after they get the jeep back on the road.

guess I was hoping for "I used XYG brand and its still good X years down the road"

So I figured I would call Misimoto to make sure I am ordering the correct one, and to make sure they have it. also I have read about different pressure caps but that was not Misimoto related.
other questions I have is I see Auto trans and Manual trans, but mine don't have the trans cooler in radiator. Maybe the MT one don't have the mounting brackets for the auto trans cooler on front? These are the questions I have. A radiator can be expensive to ship back if I get the wrong one.

Have you ever thought about contacting local rad shops to see what could be built for the Jeep?
Often they can size it to spec & build even a 2 row tank with correct fittings etc.
