my first post. i searched the forum and someone back in 2014 wrote about his transmission slipping. i didnt read about the fix.

i am the second owner, 2004 jeep liberty, 181k miles, Sport 3.7 liter, automatic trans.

the filter has never been replaced. the mechanic mentioned the risk of replacing the filter. he said removing could cause other problems that were hidden to reappear when fluid and filter are replaced.

i told him to do anyway since its never been done.

now we have a problem. if i accelerate at a low rate then the transmission shifts without an issue however when i accelerate mid to aggressive then the second gear slips quite a bit. the RPM jumps and then changes gears.

why would this happen? could this be the wrong transmission fluid?

the mechanic said he used mopar fluid. i read in here that there are two different types of transmission fluids.

how do i know which is the one i need?

Only use mopar ATF+4 fluid. When my box same year as your was rebuilt I was having issues with hunting gears and getting stuck in no man's land between ratios diagnosis metal debris had destroyed the clutch drums

Colour is right but that won't tell you if it's ATF+4 all Trans fluid I ever saw was red. I have heard of many strange thing happening if the wrong fluid Is used also make sure it is up to temp and running in neutral when you check fluid level as the T/C can drain back and give false readings.

Worst case, if all else fails, throw some Lucas Transmission additive in. If you get to that point, certainly aren't going to cause further damage. I've seen it help failing transmissions get more miles out of them. But like I said, that's the last thing I'd try after "real" fixes were either tried and failed or ruled impractical.

Your clutches are shot. Any other fix will be a bandaid. You will need a transmission rebuild or replacement.

Yes and could be a pressure related problem. Recommend that you have the electronic transmission scanned for any stored problem codes.

and i'm back, turns out the transmission is no longer slipping.. its pretty strange that after driving it for a few days and now the problem is gone. i cant imagine how that happened.

anyway, soon as that problem went away another issue started.

cracked radiator.
$200 and my own labor equals winning.

had to remove the fan, front cross bar? (i think thats the name, and the grill just to remove the radiator. only an hour and a half.

why pay someone to do work on your car or truck when you can do it yourself. i hire a mechanic for the big jobs.

I use this and the paid Dash Command app (on IOS & Android). <$30 and I can scan/clear CEL codes, get instant mpg, avg mpg, water temp, volts, and much more. It was suggested by another forum member.
