I want to switch to a 31/10.50/15. I know a few guys who are running 15 inch steel wheels but I wonder about 15 inch Aluminum wheels. Would I just have to mount it to see if it clears the brakes?

15 inch aluminum will not clear the calipers , only Soft 8s etc will in the 15 inch. Plus it seems most aluminum have pretty bad backspacing on the wheels for the KJ
How much lift do you have?

sorry just looked again, bet it will be a tight fit anyways with that tire and only a Daystar

Looking at your post again
why are you running such a wide wheel with bad backspacing ?
Correct wheel width/ backspacing would help a lot if having issues with rubbing etc

How much time/mileage do you actually spend off-road/gravel road? A good quality LR-B will give amazing service for 98% of RV drivers. If you're actually one of the other 2% or have an dedicated off-road toy,,, run the LR-Es.

I expect to stick with 16's but if I change, it'll be for larger diameter, certainly not smaller.

If you want the metric equivalent of a 31x10.50 without getting a 15" wheel then go with a 265/75/16................

For comparison, my Rugged Terrain 265's are 31.7" tall, the 15x31's are 30.5".

Metric sizing is a bit of a rough estimate, overall diameter of any tire varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Wheel width can also play a factor. What do you mean 15x31's? 31x10.5? My 245/75's are about 30.5" Tall.

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
Why go 15's in the first place? THAT is the question.

Bob

Glad you asked that, was wondering myself
Better tire selection and best reason is more sidewall.I have almost 10" of sidewall.Curb? What curb? Oh and load range C tires,I'd never put P metric tires on a SUV let alone a pickup.P metrics have less tread depth and weaker sidewalls then LT tires. Not to mention cost, the price difference between my E rated 16 tires to my C rated 15's is almost a $100 per tire.

There is a huge difference in ride(for the worse) when I run my 315/75R16 destination MT's(load range E) over my load range C 35x12.50x15 MT/R's.

I run 15" alloy rims and have bigger front brakes then a stock KJ(on my KJ) and clear with no issue.Do not take this as you can use 15" alloy's on your IFS KJ.

I tried fitting 15 aluminum rims from a 95 grand Cherokee onto my 03 Liberty, the long bolt in the steering ball joint hit the rim before rim was seated, break caliber loos to clear but not by much.

Thinking of cutting the long bolt short enough to clear the rim.
As I have the rims with a set of 235/75R-15 with 75% tread and see no reason to toss out such good tires.

"Thinking of cutting the long bolt short enough to clear the rim. "

Harmless modification, long as your expect to replace if ever taken apart.

I understood him to mean "balljoint", which is seldom loosened unless you're going to replace it.

Plus be a like a buddy installed a set of wheels I told him would not work due to hitting the calipers, worked fine with worn out brake pads, new ones shoved them out enough the wheel wouldn't turn! :happy175::happy175:

I run a set of soft eights steel in 15's with 31x10.5 - 15's with no issues. And I use powerstop brakes and rotors with no issues. I did have to pound the pinch welds and trim the front bumper to make them fit, but gas milage and power suffers.

Off topic, but what would it take to run 15" alloy rims? Does it require axle swap?
