First... thank you for such a great resource!!! I just purchased a 2004 Liberty, 3.7L and I'm doing some very overdue maintenance and TLC on her. Found a small rubber 1/2inch hose, comes off the front diff, connected to a metal elbow on differential. Hose goes up on driver's side behind radiator but not connected to anything!!? I can see a broken off piece inside that end of hose, corroded. My guess is it's a breather or overflow type hose/function. Any ideas?? (this is my first jeep!) If someone could please offer suggestions, helps?!?! Thank you, thank you!! I really do enjoy the info here!

It's the breather for the diff. That broken piece keeps dirt amd other crap from getting into the diff.

So I don't need to connect that end to anything? Does a small filter of some sort plug into the end of the hose? I was looking for tube or something that directed fluid back into the differential? (i guess the term "breather" refers to air?! - wow... i need help)

It's just a little hat-like thing - think chimney cap - that keeps dirt out of the breather. The breather itself lets air in and out of the diff, depending on the temperature. Oil expands when heated and contracts when cooled.

I think it is just push on hose fitting on the front differential that the hose connects to then it routes up into the engine bay, ending on a plastic fitting right below the battery.

This is where mine now is zip tied.
It was suppose to be connected to a bolt below the battery so I was told..

Once you put a top plate on there are not enough threads remaining to hold it in it's original location.
I have mine zip tied like yours.

I moved mine to a bolt further towards the firewall, but not ON the firewall. If I have water going to where the breather is located...I have MUCH bigger problems. :emotions33:
