Overhead Console, Anyone?

My Liberty has the standard overhead console - lights only above the mirror. Is it possible to replace this with the overhead console with compass, temperature, and lights? I have seen some in salvage yards with these features and a moon roof switch. I would just leave the moon roof switch intact. Are all Liberty's prewired for the more complex overhead console or must wiring be run to power the compass and temperature read out? Must the headliner be cut to fit? Has anyone done this? How difficult is it? Is this not worth the effort?

It's worth the effort in my opinion. Did it on my '03 - actually installed two of them. The first was from an '01 Chrysler Concord - the second from an '03 Liberty. I have the sunroof so I used the switch. If you don't you can just leave the switch in there as decoration or find the panel without the switch. Any Chrysler product from the years noted in the How-To linked below will work. This thread is fairly long but it should answer all your questions:

Thanks for the replies to my questions. They are the best answers to an internet question I have ever posted. What models and years EVIC are compatible with a 2003 Liberty? Any 2000 and up Liberty, Concorde, Grand Cherokee, 300, Dodge Intrepid? Are the 2003 Liberty's already wired for the Temperature sensor that goes in front of the radiator? Will any Chrysler temp sensor work (2000 to 2003) since they changed in 2004?

No offense taken. I picked up on the humor. I love the KJ forum for the knowledge and good natured sparring. I am a 72 year old retiree who is having a ball resurrecting a badly ignored Jeep 4x4. My 71 year old wife is pushing me to finish as she wants to go off-roading.

Yes, you can use pretty much any Chrysler EVIC - the differences are in the modes that display in the EVIC. In other words, some will show tire pressure but without the sensors in the wheels you won't get a reading. For others it won't show your rear tailgate is open as the EVIC isn't programmed for a Liberty. I just grabbed one off a Concord so I could have it - it displayed the stuff I wanted so I just kept my eyes open for an '03 Liberty EVIC and grabbed it. Sold my first one to a member here.

Your '03 will have the wiring in place for the temp sensor. I just went to AutoZone (gasp!) and bought one they had in their system. Paid $25 if I remember correctly.

On my 03 i first installed an evic off of a Grand Cherokee. Everything worked to a point - some selections I made wouldnt stay in the memory. I eventually bought one out of an 03 Liberty and everything works perfect.
