OEM Trailer Hitch - DO NOT TOW!

Well - before we all get excited about a free trailer hitch...

I had my 2004 Jeep Liberty in for service yesterday and also asked the dealer to perform recall N46. When I picked up my Jeep, I was told by the Service Consultant - the trailer hitch is not actaully to be used for towing, only for structural reinforcement and safety - HUH?

Why install a trailer hitch that cannot be used for towning?

So for confirmation I called the Chrysler Group Recall Assistance Center phone # on the mailer and was told the exact same thing. There is no wiring harness attached to the hitch since it is not intended to be used for towing. If I choose to install the wiring harness and tow, that is on me.

I have to wonder...if I sell this Jeep - how will the next owner know that the trailer hitch is only for decoration?

First ... Welcome!

Second ... I'm not trying to ruffle your feathers (more than they already are) but you answered your own question...

Why install a trailer hitch that cannot be used for towning?

for structural reinforcement and safety

All they are interested in is trying to lessen the chance of a gas tank rupture in the event of a rear end collision.

I had to pay for my hitch and my harness 5yrs ago. ;)

Good news? The harness is not expensive and easy to install... certain types, all you will need is a screwdriver and 5 minutes.

Breathe ..... :)

I got my free trailer hitch from Chrysler, Bought my own Reese Tongue/Ball and had a hitch shop in town install a proper wiring setup for it, Why is everyone getting so upset? The dealer is just covering their butt in the event someone tries pulling stuff when their jeep that is not equipped for that kind of towing and tries to go back on the dealer!

Why are people getting upset - you ought to try being in the UK - our Jeeps are being recalled and the 'fix' here is to fit a crossbeam. Not a problem you may think - however, if you currently have a towbar fitted and are properly equipped for towing they will remove it and you will not be able to have it or any other towbar fitted EVER. So a vehicle purchased specifically to tow with is now not fit for purpose. Any one want to purchase a Jeep?????

Simple. Take tow bar off, then have them install the beam, get home and remove beam and reinstall your hitch.

Who is upset? I'm not a chat room regular, I only posted the recall information to try to be helpful to other Jeep owners. I have never towed or will never tow anything in my life! But it does beg a legitimate question - if I bought a used Jeep w/a hitch attached, I would assume it was for towing - unless I was advised otherwise by the seller. If you don't see the problem w/that scenarario - remind me to never buy a used car from any of you!

People attach hitches to basically everything now. Saw a Prius with one the other day.... Probably should look into if a vehicle is able to tow before assuming it is based on parts

We are not referring to the recall in the UK, CactusJacked has the perfect fix for that lol.

Its simply a liability thing the dealer is doing, They don't want/need anymore angry customers, I would find out if that vehicle I purchased was originally equipped and properly set up to tow anything first, I would not by a DeLorean with a Flux Capacitor installed and assume it was meant for time travel :p.

I recall somebody here showing the warning sticker on their new hitch that said not for towing, or some such wording of that nature. When bending over scoping out what's needed for adding the wiring, noticing the warning is (should be) enough to make one ask "hey what's up with that".

Again - who is ruffled, upset or angry? I have NEVER towed anything or bought a used car IN MY LIFE! You are all missing the point of my post. The next ower of my Jeep wil be COMPLELTY UNAWARE of this scenario and I'm afraid Chrysler may have created an even bigger liabilty problem than the one they tried to fix.
When these hitches - not having been throughly reaserched by the subsequent owners prior to towing (are you kidding me?) come flying off and injure someone.

If there was a sticker, I wouldn't be asking the question.
Good call Cactus - I will ask for one when I bring the Jeep in this weekend!

Who is accusing anyone of being ruffled, upset or angry? I was just stating my opinion, I saw a picture of the sticker he is talking about and someone even had the warning on their invoice, I wonder if it is a US market thing, Here in Canada I had no warning stickers and nothing on my invoice or anything said to me by the dealer.

The warning sticker actually says don't leave the tow ball on when not towing lol it's a real hitch for real towing here.

What are you talking about? It's not going to "come flying off and injure someone". It has the same number of bolts the hitch that came with the factory tow package came with, and that's rated for 5,000 lbs.

The reason they've posted or given the warning is for liability about damage to the owner's own Jeep if they should decide to tow anything with the 'free' hitch without adding HD cooling.

I would say go with the Mopar kit but its expensive, There's a hitch shop near my house that my uncle has used for decades as he buys a new vehicle every couple years and they are top notch and they quoted me $100 installed for the wiring kit with warranty, Not sure what brand they use but they said its a proper compatible kit for the Liberty, I found a Liberty at ick N Pull with the factor wiring kit but it was rear ended and mangled the important parts :(
