I need to change the manual transmission lubricant in my '03 Liberty sport, 4 cylinder. I visited a dealer to get a price quote on the fluid, Mopar 75W-85, and found out that it would cost me upwards of $70 for just the lubricant. Is there a big difference between gear oils such as 75W-85, 75W-80, or 75W-90? It would save me a lot of money if I could put 75W-90 or 80 in my transmission. I am going to be doing an oil change and rear differential change this weekend, so I am going to be spending enough as it is. Also, are there any filters that I need to change in the transmission system that I need to change? Thanks!

I've heard good things about the manual trans lubes from AMSOIL, Redline, etc.

Honestly I wouldn't touch it unless you're having problems like hard to shift or water intrusion.
It's supposed to be good for life....

Thanks for the advice!! Rockymountain: Really? It is supposed to be good for life? My hanes manual says it is supposed to be changed every 30k miles. Maybe that is only for ATF. That would explain why it has performed fine since my dad bought it 7 years ago.
