Co-workers 2004 overheating

They had a cracked rad and replaced it along with all the relays and thermostat but it is still overheating. Actually the fluid on their overflow is boiling. Any ideas? I asked about the fluid type but it is the right one. Fan is kicking in and they did replace that too.

sounds like your coolant is getting trapped on the hot side of the thermostat? only reason i can think of that it would boil in the overflow...

No coolant is being lost. It is just cooking away in the rez.

They said the thermostat is in right, no air in system and they are stumped. They were asking me for someone local to look at it. We will see what happens. Lol.

The husband tried to drive it to his
Brothers, less than a mile away and it did it again. I told her to check the thermostat and she said again he would not put it in wrong. I just shrugged and said back. Start with simple stupid. If he is going to empty the rad anyway why not check it?

Does the heat work? If not it's gor air in the system or the t-stat is backwards,or both.

It does have heat. Lol they did not want to use it at 110 outside but it was there.

Well they replaced the water pump and now believe it is the PCM. So they are working on diagnosing that. I honestly do not think that is it but they are adamant that it is nothing we have said. Will keep you all posted what it ends up being.

What makes them think the PCM is inbolved? Is the radiator fan not coming on? If not, what have they done to verify the fan is ok, and not bad?

They talked to a guy at the parts store and he said the PCM could have a crack in it and for a mere $50 or something like that they can have access to the same book, digital version, as mechanics and it will tell them all they need to know. They did check the fan and it does run but I wonder if it does not run when driving or if one of the relays that they put in is bad. I agree with the other posts that the fluid is not circulating for what ever reason. LOL, how funny would it be if they forgot to take out one of the plugs! OMG

well.. even in 110 heat.. considering the low side fan rarely ever runs due to the efficiency of the 3.7s cooling system.. after checking to make sure the fans are functional.. which should have already been done..

but even if they aren't for it to be circulating and boiling

troy hit it already, regardless of what they say.. for it to be behaving in that manner if the pumps working, thermos in correctly, no air, fans working

- cracked head / gasket

4.0's will crack a head in a heartbeat and never lose a drop of coolant yet every time ambient temp gets over 90.. sizzle sizzle..

No offense to the parts store guys that get on here, but the last person they should take advice from, is probably the parts guy where they are at. PCMs dont just get cracks in them, the guy is wanting to sell more parts to keep throwing at it. $50 I doubt will give access to the same stuff we get access to, and even what we use, its written with nominal technical experience is understood. We use mitchell on demand/shopkey, identifix, iatn, and alldata. There is something called autodata, but Im told its pretty basic. At best, that $50 is going to a site that will give them some basic troubleshooting tips, and leave them guessing after a few hundred dollars more in parts,lol. If the fan works on high, and its boiling over/overheating, especially if it does it rapidly, then its time to get a block tester, aka CO tester. Any good parts store has them in stock.

Okay what engine does it have?

In another post in another thread you stated a coworkers '04 is overheating and it's the 4 ******.With what you just stated above is they just replaced the waterpump,well if it's the 2.4 gas I4 the water pump is timing belt driven and if they can not figure out why it's overheating how can they figure out how to a timing belt on the 2.4?


The PCM has nothing to do with overheating if the electric fan works.

Curious, is this thing at a repair shop or a back yard garage?

Went looking back and seen where the OP mentioned in a different thread the topic vehicle is a 4banger. Those engine had issues in the cars with overheating. The PT cruisers were well known to grenade when the fan died and they overheated. I dont know how many times I have had to retrace what a mechanic had done, only to find out that he lied and didnt do half the work he claimed. Are they sure this mechanic has had the waterpump out, etc?

They are doing it themselves. Her husband was a mechanic years ago before he became disabled.

I personally think it is either a head gasket or a bad "new" part. Their rad had a crack and they decided to swap out a bunch of things, none of which were bad and they only have 70k miles or there abouts.

I am about to head in and will find out the latest.

Latest--the error code that is now
Popping up says bad PCM. What that code is she does not know just that the check engine light came on and her husband said that is what it says to check. Another coworker whose father "was a big wig at a jeep dealer" says to call up the dealer with the vin to see if the PCM was swapped out already. I guess there was a recall on them? Well that is the latest. Not the most insightful but none the less the latest.
