replacing CV's.....what all parts is involved?

AHA, I just had a eureka moment. A slide hammer with some steel "hooks" on the end would have worked really well to pull the seal. I'm gonna have to build some wee hooks for my slide hammer. Damn, I'm a freakin' genius. You can quote me on that whole genius part.

I just replaced my intermediate shaft and right side CV shaft, not too bad of a job. Anyway it's all put back together and I have taken it on a nice test drive. Every once in a while it will pop when going over rough terrain and turning either direction. I took it to a huge parking lot and did figure 8's, it pop a couple of times, but then stopped and did not do it again, until I was pulling in my driveway and went over the curb while turning and it popped again. Has any1 had this happen, or is it just everything re-seating? I got the shaft from mopar and the remanned cv shaft from napa, it went back together very easyily, just hope it's not something else....

check to make sure you got your swaybar links torqued down right... they can be pretty noisy otherwise.

Clevis bolts done up tight? Or is the pop you talk about the same thing that happened when the inner CV fell off of the intermediate shaft the first time? Was the CV retaining ring installed on the shaft? I've been wheeling, looking to post Flex pics for Feb and haven't had any trouble with mine. I used the Cardone shafts and so far no issues. I don't know what guys were going on about the length for. The front suspension has been stretched/relaxed a few times and the joints didn't pull apart. Maybe the folks at Cardone got their $hit together.

I did my CVs yesterday, got an intermediate shaft from www.rompalicious.com, made by Spicer, $109 CDN delivered, I ordered 2 circlips but it turns out the shaft came with 2 installed so I now have 2 extras. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

All is good now....wheeew!!! I forgot to re-tighten the top bolt on the sway bar. I had to loosen it to push the rod out of my way. Rode over some curbs and noise is none existent.
ptsb5a: the remanned cv I bought was cardone. My cv didn't fall off the shaft. I had to take off the clevis because the shaft and cv would not come apart. I ended up having to beat the old cv off the shaft, they were chewed up and VERY rusty. All is good now and thanks for the post.....

Sorry about that, I have just started poking around in this forum.
I bought remanned CVs for 141 a piece also. I did, however, get totally screwed on the axle seals, I was unable to source them and bought 2 from a dealership at $36 apiece!!! After I had them installed I discovered rompalicious, who has them for under $10.
hey all, what a night, pulled shafts out at our garage at work for the last four hours.
i have the left side in the back of the libby, which looks fine,splines intact right to the edge.
but it was an adventure putting it back together.
first, i, think i put the lowr contrl arm nut on the clevis bolt and stripped both the bolt and nut(i took off the bolt at the bottom of the clevis, that hooks to lower control arm,FSM wasnt clear but i think the top one,holding the strut, would have been easier).luckily was in a shop and had others alike laying around( i drive a concrete mixer and we did it in the garage at work) then cause i stripped the lower control arm nut we looked around for another to replace it, thought we had one, put it on, and then lowered the jack,after installing tire of course,and the bolt on control arm let go(wasnt metric),thankfully i was lowering the jack slowlyand happened there and not on the road. so off i go to napa for a lower ball joint just to get the nut that it comes with. Success.
Off to the right side, this is where i realize that would probably b better to loosen clevis at top where holds strut bcause when i pull cv out, the int. shaft came with it and was a ***** to get clevis out of the way to pull it straight out. the coil was at 45 deg. to make room, oh well, upgrading suspension to OME in the next month or so any way.the right side cv is still connected to the intermediate shaft now, just packed up and came home.
heres the thing though, the noise is gone,drove home 25 km and no clunking, no vibe, smooth again.
but the splines look good,there was a small bit of filings at the end of the int. shaft,the side in the differential, but nothing much, and the splines were still nice. the only ones i cant see are at the connect between the right cv and intermediate shaft, still in one piece in the cargo area. have to pull apart tomorrow. now im hoping that when i get it apart i see damage, because otherwise wold mean my problem not there, right ? based on visual that left side is fine , gonna just put that one back in.
the only other part would be the front driveshaft right ? that i took 'out of the loop' , when removing half shafts? do the bearings in that ever go ?
hope i didnt do all this for nothing and its something else is all im thinking.
well, just thought i would share.
i will see tomorrow when i get the right side cv and int. shaft apart, thats gotta be where the problem is, as its pretty much fused together with rust, crossing fingers and off to bed, will write back in the morning after some quality time in the garage with my cv and a big fucken hammer.

I ended up having to beat the old cv off the shaft said:just saw this, sounds familiar, so im optimistic that an intermediate shaft and a right side cv will be purchased tomorrow and i wont have to start at square one to find the remedy for my clunking front end.
almost order this from dealer yesterday but thought, u know, maybe better just make sure that that was the problem before committing $273 CAD to it (non-returnable), now i know where to find cheaper, thank you.

f1paul, are you driving around without the intermediate shaft in place?? The hole left behind leaves the diff open to contamination from road debris. Seeing as you live in the center of the universe, Teranhta there's gonna be some salty crap getting in there. Be careful dude.

Looks like this shaft is a popular item but it's kind of hard to find on Rompalicious' website.

The intermediate shaft part number is 5066057AB, $87.95
The seal part number is 5066066AA, $8.95, and get yourself a seal puller, the passenger side is a pain to remove.
If you click on the part number for the shaft, instead of a picture of the shaft they have a seal, however this part number is correct, they just have the wrong picture, I called and pointed this out to them.
Remember the shaft comes with the retaining clips installed so no need to order any.

ya i am but i stuffed some rags in the holes, gonna chnge out the fluid in the front diff
when i reinstall every thing.
the only positive here in toronto is it hasnt snowed here yet(nothing major) so the roads
dont have the layer of salt brine like they usually do.i think i should be alright until i
reinstall everything next wekend.
gonna have a coffee and then try and pull apart the shaft from the right CV and see whats doin in there.
im just trying to get past the hangover im dealing with, man what a headache.
when i reinstall every thing.

I was at a black tie Robbie Burns dinner (read scotch, scotch, haggis, and then more scotch)
drunk.gif last night and I'm feeling it.
Taking the whole "strut" assembly out is way easier, sounds like you left it in, only takes 30 seconds more to pull it , super easy to change out did mine in about 45/ 50 minutes on the right side
When you pull the intermediate and CV apart you will see the problem I am sure
