Mopar Oil Filter

I noticed that my mechanic put a mopar oil filter on my Libby. Are mopar filters alright or should I put a better filter on?

They're made by Fram....but it's rare to have an issue. I'd just make sure a better filter is used next time.

I think they were made my Purelator, but Fram now???

Anyway....next time use a filter that you know what it really is.

Mopar gets the filters from different suppliers, so one shipment could be Frams, the next Purolators, etc.

Yep... They have a contract with all the makers, so whatever the guys pulls out of the box in the parts room... Could be a case from one, a case from another, etc...

On the upside, i have been using Fram for so long i don't think it looks right to have a non-orange filter in there... LOL

I had a case of them actually that I got when the KJ was fairly new from the Dealer. I still have some of them. The parts guy (who I know) said they were Purolater. So I bought them for $5 apiece. That was a couple of years ago. But they could have changed Mfg since?? So if the parts guy was right that's what they were when I got them??

Anyway, I have been using them with no drama. It doesn't say on the boxes I have who made them, just Mopar all over the place and they are black....

There was a HUGE thread on this, a Fram = Junk thread. Mopar used to use Fram, but they use Purolator, and Champion. I did some research, and found that they were using Fram up till and including 1999.

They are currently using Purolator and Champion, not sure on Fram, but, it varies from engine to engine too.

I could believe Purolator - for a CRD, the Mopar filter is actually stamped "Made in Italy". And the only aftermarket filter I've found that is an exact match as far as construction and layout is a Purolator.

Interesting little fact - the CRD diesel and the 3.7 V6 use the same thread size for the oil filter - 3/4 - 16. It's one of the standard oil filter thread sizes, and has a standard gasket size to go with it. So if you find a longer/fatter oil filter with 3/4-16 thread, as long as you have enough room to spin it on, it'll work. I actually use a Mobil 1 M301 on the CRD - 1/2" fatter and 1 1/2" longer than the Mopar filter or even the one Mobil 1 actually specs. At one time I ran an Amsoil EaO-26 on it - that thing was HUGE, added a half-quart to sump capacity.

Yeah, the FL-1A also fits, and is what most people here use for the larger filter. I will look at the M301 as well...
