hello everyone, i have lost my owners manual and ive been looking all over the web but i cant find any clear answers on this. i have an 02 sport with 117584 miles and most of them were done on the freeway(the girl i bought it from put on 50 miles a day). i do not know when anything has been changed or fixed, so i wanted to know what kind of stuff i should do to it to keep it up to date (i.e belts, hoses, changes, flushes) and is there any of it that i could do by myself instead of paying the shops.

You can inspect the belt for rotting, and cracks. Mine needs replaced...

In a case such as this? Do all the fluid changes to be SAFE. I did it when I bought mine at the dealer, it's always a good idea when getting a used one, because you NEVER know what was done.

Look at the oil, look at the trans fluid, and check the DIFF fluid levels...

Not to be a jerk, but women car owners generally do NOT care for them as men to, that's a fact. If a women owned a car I bought, I would maintenance EVERYTHING, regardless. I know women in my family, and friends of mine; they just get in and DRIVE, and don't ever consider the maintenance schedules... I can't tell you how MANY times a girl I know, has said, I was driving and THIS or THAT happened. Then I ask, did you do THIS, or THAT? They say NO, I never thought about it... So, if a woman owned that vehicle, SERVICE it...

After my experiences? If I knew a women owned my jeep before me? Ehh, I would have through twice about buying it. I did not ask though, but if for some reason, it came up? I dunno, I would have had to go over it with a fine-tooth comb... Mine looks like the belt was never changed...

These are the basic change intervals

Transmission Fluid = 30,000 miles [Fluid = ATF+4]
Transfercase = 15,000 miles [Fluid = ATF+4]
Front Diff = 15,000 miles [75w-90 or 75w-140]
Rear Diff = 15,000 miles [75w-90 or 75w-140]
Engine Oil = 3000 miles or your perfered change interval [5w-30]
Coolant = 60,000 miles or every 5 years [Mopar Coolant or Zerex G-05 ONLY!]

Since the vehicle in new to you, I would change all the fluids that you can afford to change no matter what you were told. It is much safer to start fresh...

At 100K miles the hoses and thermostat should be swapped out.

The belt is recommended every 60K miles but at ~$20.00 I would just swap on a new one anyway.

If you are feeling frosty, the shocks [front/rear] can be replaced when you have some extra money.

You might want to have the AC system checked as well.

That is where I would start....

P.S. what part of west Michigan? I have family in Holland.

oh
change the belt, and now I learn, the tensioner assembly at the same time :)

I would lift it up and change all the fluids. If you do them all at once youll save yourself some time. Dont flush the trans, just drop pan and refill. drain diffs and fill, drain tcase and fill, change oil.

The trans and tcase use ATF+4, valvoline makes it
The diffs take different stuff depending on which you have I think.

Buy a fluid pump, the diffs and tcase will be a breeze.

You also need RTV for both trans pan and rear diff casing. I bought both at chrysler, might as well pick up a PCV there as well, cheap & easy.

If you get into it you can flush the brake system and power steering, all while it is lifted. Will also give you a good look at the brake pads and rotors since the wheels are off.

I did all of this one day last summer, it was easier to do it all at once, for me.

Crap, forgot to mention coolant, I did that too since it was easy to get to the drain ****. I used mopar/chrysler coolant.

Her Jeep should not be driveable after leaving it in part time for that long. Did she wonder why it was called part time?

Part time for 5 months? A person here had theirs left in by accident, hit 70Mph and the transfer case blew apart. If it was constantly WET, snow or ice for that 5 months, MAYBE not so bad, but on dry pavement, that's a no no...

I change my trans fluid every 36K, but, only did it ONCE in the Avenger at 30-some-Kay miles. I had a trans cooler on it, I checked the fluid a lot, was always the correct color, so, didn't change it. I used ATF+4, whish is synthetic anyway, so I let go. No slips, no shift problems, nothing!

I change my Syth oil ever 9K (change filters at 3,6 top off, and then 9) I went 24K miles on the Avenger once using 10W40 synthetic. Syn oil really takes a beating, and I use it in the Lib now as well.

I change the brake fluid when it's brown in the reservoir. I use a spray bottle thing, stick it in, and pump it out. Run it for a week, then do it again... I never, EVER bled and refilled. I could always push all four of the caliper plungers in with my thumbs, so I never needed to change it. No calipers ever hung up on me, nothing. The V6 Avenger I had was the most reliable car I ever owned. Rust would have done this car in WAY before the drivetrain failed on me. Original timing belt, original water pump, EVERYTHING was original at 150K+ miles on it when traded...

Also, In my avenger, I never, EVER changed the coolant - 150k+ miles, nothing wrong with it. Didn't have to change the water pump, no clogs, and no rad build up. The stuff they use is supposed to last 75K or more miles anyway. My water pump was good, at high rpms it would kick coolant out the over-flow anyway, so I was ALWAYS topping it off. Even at 150K+ miles, when at 5.5K rpms, coolant would go out the over-flow. This car did this since the day I bought it, new off the show-room floor in Aug 2000.

I have a trans drain kit I want to install in the Lib, and will as soon as I take it in for the change, I will have my buddy at his shop do it, so I can drain and fill whenever I want.

I will do the same to this Lib, that I did to the Avenger, because it WORKED for ME...

x2...

I mean, to accidentally put in in PT once for a mile or less, it's probably ok...but don't make a habit of that.:)

Change the plugs! I was amazed at how bad mine were at 50k. Very easy to do. Mobil 1 full-syn oil in the engine works really nice and didn't cost a ton. Check the brake pads. Women drivers(at least around here) tend to ride the brakes a bit harder than they should. At least you won't have much engine sluge with a driving profile like that! ;)

Man how did I forget the spark plugs?!

Autolite Single / Double Plantinum's every 30,000 miles.

I tried Iridiums and saw now benefit...
