Okay, so I have this ambitious new idea I might actually try to do. I found some overhead OnStar consoles on ebay and wondered how much it would take to install one in my KJ and then, of course, buy myself an OnStar subscription. The Aveo console looked like it might fit alright, but who knows. Any ideas/suggestions? Will this even work? What are your opinions?

Don't know if it's really worth it, other than how it reports if you've been in an accident. Other than that, if you want the direction feature, they were NEVER able to locate anything for me. But I had it last in 02. Maybe they've changed. A GPS might more usefull overall.

There's more then just that console for OnStar, there should also be a CPU box that is mostly found in the truck of the vehicle, without the whole system the OnStar is useless.

Yea, ONSTAR is more complicated. The GF has it and it is wired into the computor and also reads all the DIC functions (Driver Info Center). ONSTAR can read your mileage, tire pressures, where you are, weather you need an oil change, etc etc. Like Big Brother is watching you....haha

I don't know if you could get it to work in a Jeep. I always thought it was a GM propriatory system made to integrate into GM vehicles.....I don't know for sure though.

I was more interested in the relaying a crash deal than anything else--I know it wouldn't be able to tell them if the air bags ever deployed, because I imagine that would have to be wired into the computer or something. I'm still going to do some research though--unless someone has a GPS that can report crashes--lol I have a GPS already--Garmin--but as far as I know it doesn't do anything like that =P

You'd have to have the whole unit and hard wire it into the SRS control module since the SRS control module is the only way to automatically send details like you where just in a crash.Good luck with that, there expensive little buggers.

So strange this is only a GM item, I know GM is paying a premium so they never release to other vehicles, but you would think the money they could make from having this a stock and aftermarket option for every ride would be even more

I don't know if they're still doing it, but Volkswagen at one time in the 2000s offered OnStar in their vehicles as well.

Yeah I'm sure there's much, much more to it than putting in an overhead console. Those vehicles are equipped with numerous sensors and servos that interface with the OnStar unit. Plus I don't think GM would let you activate an OnStar unit in a vehicle other than a GM (although I never knew about the VW thing until just now, thanks Marlon). I think they use your VIN number to identify your vehicle...

Good idea though.

Why not just get a Garmin? What exactly is the benefit of the On Star?

Summon emergency services in the event of an accident, out-of-gas, other disablement or airbag deployment; open your doors if you lock yourself out; someone to talk to if your bored, etc.

I have a Garmin currently--And nothing in the manual said anything about it doing anything other than giving directions and being able to download games and such. Am I missing something? o_O
