When going from 2 wheel to 4hi is no problem. But in and out of 4Lo is hard as hell. Any help would be great.

like it was said
milage?
242 or 231?
last oil change?
are you rolling in Neutral when you are going to and from low?
how often if ever was it used in 4low?

My TJ was never put in to 4 low and after 3 years and 30K it did not want to go in
now just 16K later ,of which 5K have been in 4low, thing shifts like a champ

you may just need to change the oil
drive around on the dirt some where in 4 low for about and hour then go home and change the oil again

i bought the jeep used so im not sure about the last oil change. It has 110,000 on it now. The guy i bought it from was older and hardly used the 4x4. I was in neutural and it was still hard to switch.

Neutral is needed, but it helps to be rolling at about 2-3 mph to help it engage.

I'd definitely change the oil if you're unsure of when it was last done. I'd think you'd have to change the oil and keep playing with it. If and when it finally gets into 4 Lo, give it some exercise by shifting in and out several times. In the future, slip it into 4lo here and there and you shouldn't run into the problem again.

Switching out of 4lo can be a cranky process. I have an '04 sport. If you read the owners manual, just switching into 4lo is a 'process'. Apparently this 'process' was too much for the fairer sex (according to Chrysler) so they switched to a push button system in the KK.

Sometimes the vehicle has to be rolling between 5 and 10 mph and in neutral to get it out of 4lo.

These are the directions I give my girlfriend and she's never had any issues getting her KJ or mine into fourwheel drive.....

1) Apply the brakes and hold them.
2) Shift the transmission from Park to Neutral and back to Park.
(This will unload tension/load placed against the driveline)
3) Shift the transfer case to the desired position.

Oil change interval kinda depends on how you use the Jeep. Every 30k is a good interval. Its something you can easily do in your driveway if you are handy around tools at all.

Since youve not said, Ill assume you have the 231 tcase which has the [2wd, 4part-time, N, 4low] options. Never use 4wd on pavement of any type with this tcase. Since you live in Kentucky like me, you will probably hardly ever see roads that are 100% covered in snow so you cannot use your 4wd on the road. If the roads are 100% covered in snow then its ok to use 4wd.

With the 231 tcase, Shift the ****** to N while roling 2-3mph and shift to the desired mode of 4wd. Put the ****** back into D and/or 2nd gear or 1st gear and go about your way.

I never found it to be a complicated process, but I know from experience that whenever you have to do more than press a button, you're going to get confused users-- especially those new to 4wd.

I seem to recall the users manual process, while clear, suggests some pretty tight conditions. I know I've had trouble getting it into 4lo when the car was at a standstill. Rolling forward/back, or shifting to Neutral often helps (unloading tension etc.)
