Whining power steering

Anyone esle get the screaming power steering pump in the winter? Whats up with that? Fluid level is fine and it does not do it in the summer. Is this a warning sign? Is there a bearing in the pump that may be going bad or is this normal?

Normal,not normal if it does not go away when warmed up.


Basically the use of the plastic resivour and a alloy pump is the cause,the plastic and alloy expand at different rates and that o-ring that seals the 2 together allows air to enter the system causing the noise.Once warmed up the 2 pieces will seal again and the whine will go away,if it does not you got a leak or a bad pump.

Try changing your fluid with frsh synthetic P/S fluid or ATF+4,it may help a little.

Yep,mine does it,always has whine first started in the winter then goes away after it's warmed up.Run into it alot at work also,most people don't like that a noise is "normal".

Mine doesnt do it but it does give out a YELP when I first start it if its really cold(teens).

My dads PS pump on his 4.7 in his ram sounds like a herd of cats coming up the driveway at all times.

ive seen it on alot at work too. my gfs does a quick whine if its really cold after you first start it.

my jeep doesnt do it, but my rover sounds similar to your dads ram haha (blarg) never thought of it that way, its annoying as all get out until warm

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but my Jeep does this also. It goes away within a minute or less, but it's very annoying.

What's the fix for it?

If this is caused by the two disimilar material expanding, will a bead of RTV around the joint solve the problem?

Mine started to do this at 80xxx miles. It was quite obnoxious until it warmed up. The fix for it was to replace the power steering pump. After that was done it doesn't ever whine now, no matter the temp outside.

If you think your dad's is bad, try a HEMI steering pump. Almost put in my noice cancling headphone with Van Halen at full volume .

Got one of those too. Its fine so far.

Thing about the hemi's power steering pump is it also runs the cooling for the engine. Neat setup but if the pump goes bad youre screwed.

Sounds like the only way to stop it is to replace the whole pump then. That kinda bites.
