I needed to select 4 part-time to park my boat on a wet lawn. Selected 2wd afterwards as normal but when I did a sharp turn at slow speed I got the same problem as has been dicussed here. Is this a common problem, lack of use, or just me ? Had a transmission specialist put it up on a hoist and it freed immediately. What if it happens again, can I just jack up a front wheel to free it ? Is there a preferred method ?

The transfer case mode does not change immediately after changing the lever position. Moreover, the indicator on the dashboard indicates only the lever position and not the actual state of the transfer case. It takes changing the lever position and momentarily accelerating in a straight line for the actual change to occur. So in your case part time was still engaged when you did the sharp turn. Sometimes it also disengages with loud bang in the turn.

I know what you mean by the loud bang. It happened after about 10 minutes driving and several turns, I thought something had broken in the back end. Still did not release.

My 242 must be special... I get zero binding when in the full time mode.

My 242 is very picky about not wanting to shift into or out of any 4wd mode though. Ive found that I must shift when Im going to be driving straight for awhile.

When I had my 02 Limited with the 242 I would just put it in drive, move a few feet, put it in reverse, move a few feet, and back to drive. Typically this would get it to come out of 4wd if it was being finicky.

We have just towed our boat 1600Km and used 4 f t on wet roads. No drag in that mode. But it stuck after using 4 p t, not usually a problem. Thanks for your comments. We will be launching Friday but on a nice clean concrete ramp, not like the lake shore near home.

Like my jeep, small enough for my wife to take shopping, big enough to tow my boat (2500lb), but not the best ride while towing. Our Queensland roads are mostly to blame.

Better suspension will take care of the ride

Nice boat! And yea, better springs will help a lot with the ride. Old Man Emu from ARB is great. Email them for a quote.

Thanks, I know much more about boats than Jeeps, (but I am learning).
