Early diesel engines had separate fuel injection lines from the injector pump to each cylinder, and the injection timing was mechanically set in the pump. In modern diesels the fuel pump pressurises the fuel into a Common Rail at very high pressure (up to 2000 bar or 30,000psi!) and the injection timing and duration for each cylinder is electronically controlled at each individual injector, with the whole thing controlled by the ECU.

I've just hit 145,000 km (87,000 miles) on my 2006 CRD. Having trouble with the ESP/BAS and traction control system. Indicator lights keep coming on for no apparent reason.

You'll need to get that scanned for the DTC's, which usually point to the failing component - you can also R&R the four connectors for the individual wheel sensors, as oxidation\corrosion\dirty\faulty connectors give the same symptoms as faulty sensors - then follow the harness, checking the connectors along the harness up to where the it enters the body - usually those inside are better protected and seldom oxidize
