No. Everything else is connected to the RPM, well the transmission could vary in theory but I'd throw my guess in with a electric motor or vacuum leak. Although the vacuum leak wouldn't just quit.
What a weird sound, I'd never have guessed the fan. Hope that is what it is.

My XJ's efan is going bad and the bearings make a rattling noise, can shake the fan quite a bit.

Definitely sounds electrical to me. To me it sounds exactly like my radiator fan when it kicks in.

After the motor swap in the commander on one of the test drives there was this odd sound I couldn't place, didn't seem to correspond with engine rpm or the transmission, turned out my passenger turned on the vent fan and it's bearings were on the way out. Drove me nuts for a few miles until I realize what she had done.

I have a small emergency kit in my glovebox that contains a whistle.

We had all these problems with the Jeep (bad tensioner and power steering pulley, and now this mystery sound) and then we heard a rattle.

My wife was like 'What the **** is it now?!"

Turned out it was the pea in the whistle.... :D

I'll check the fan tonight and report back. Fingers crossed....

So guess what?

IT WAS THE FAN!!!

I've spent so many hours searching for what it could be and worrying that I would need to make repairs I can't afford right now, and all this time it was just the fan kicking in.

There's definitely something wrong with the fan - there's no way it should sound like it does. The bearings must have gone bad.

At least it's a cheap and easy part to replace.

Thanks everyone for your help in narrowing it down :D
