I have a trunk mount style Yakima rack that I'd like to use on my KJ. There are glass hatch hooks that can be used on glass windows. http://www.orsracksdirect.com/yakima-8002612.html

Has anyone ever tried mounting a trunk style bike rack to the glass on the rear hatch? I'm thinking that it might be too heavy, but thought I'd see if anyone has ever tried it and how did it work out for you? I really don't want to break the window! I've used it on other SUV's, but they had a frame around the back window whereas the Liberty window has no frame.

I can always go to a spare tire mounted rack if need be (I didn't get towing pkg so can't use the hitch mount style, and there's no way I could lift a bike to the top of the vehicle, even with a ladder!)

Thanks.

I havn't used that type that attaches to glass but i would be very leary of trying it. - just my opinion - I've used the hitch type and they are the best by far. Much safer and more secure. ---- but if you don't have a receiver then your only other option is the one that attaches to the spare tire.

I used to work at a Yakima dealer, I've sold them for years and never had any issues with the glass hooks on any vehicle, but personally I wouldn't get one. They're a pain in the ass to put on and take off and set at the right angle.

Never used a spare tire carrier myself, but Mopar's looks pretty cheap. But I don't see any problems them, I wouldn't put more than 2 bikes on there though. My personal favorite is the hitch rack. Slide it in the receiver, put a pin in and away you go with up to 4 bikes.

Do not buy a rack that clamps on the top tube (horizontal tube between head tube and seat tube, affectionately known as a nut buster). They can damage the top tube.

Although there is no "frame" around the rear window glass, there is a water channel attached to the inside top of the glass that may be deformed if hooks were attached. You might want to consider that.
