Transmission replacement

My sister-in-law has a 2004 liberty sport with automatic transmission. It has over 120,000 miles on it and the trans was slipping bad. She took it to a transmission shop and they want $2,900 to replace it. She does not know if that is a new, used or a rebuilt trans.
My question is, does that seem high or is that about the average cost?

down here you can get a rebuilt one for about 800 or so depending upon where you go.

Average cost for rebuilding a 42RLE + R&I labor, is about $2400-$2600.Brand new the MSRP is about $2400 for the 42RLE alone(+$600 core) which does not include removal/install.

Got a used one installed for $1,400. Quoted for a rebuilt for $2,500.
