Hey guys, first time poster, long time owner!

I own 2 Jeep KJs here in Australia.

One of my transmissions blew up and I’m having trouble identifying what I can put in it.

It is a March 2003 LTD with a 42RLE (must have been one of the first with it L)

I want to know which 42RLE’s I can put in it, because they are often labelled as 2001-2004, then others labelled 2004-2007 etc

That would mean I only have a one year production of my particular trans to use, because they only started putting them in in 2003, which I guess is why the second hand ones they are getting really expensive here.

But they are both 42RLE DG6 with the 305mm sump.

Or are they the same?

Here is my VIN: 1J8GM58K23W674490

If anyone can help, that would be great, because it’s giving me a headache…

I do not have all the info for you but, the one thing that comes to mind is that the 03-04 42RLE should work fine.
Is it possible you could have the trans re-built with a warranty?
If my trans bites the dust one day, I would get it re-built with a new torque converter for piece of mind.

When I was looking for a 42RLE replacement for my '05, what mattered was the number of electrical connections on the driver's side: 3 connections or 4 connections. Nothing else mattered one bit.

I ended up buying a used, known good trans on eBay from an auto recycler in MI with a huge warehouse and the trans had a 30-day warranty. It's been great (knock on wood) for 60,000 miles now. Just did a pan drop and filter change when I replaced the trans cooler lines a few weeks ago and everything looked great. With freight shipping to my work, where we have a forklift, it only cost me $300. I threw the dice and came up lucky.
