Tools size

Hi

I want to perform maintenance to the KJ... I need some tools, but I don't want to "over buy" or buy the wrong ones...

The things I want to do/change are:

- Oil and filter
- Air filter
- Spark plugs
- ATF and filter
- Coolant flush and refill

For the oil/filter and air I know I don't need nothing special, b/c I've did those things in the past...

I rode the HOW TO section and I've already found the tools I need for the spark plugs change...

So I still need the size of the radiator draincock bolt?/nut? (I believe I don't need to mess with the cylinder block drain plug, please correct me if I'm wrong about this) and the size of the transmission pan bolts (42RLE).

I just did a plug change 2 days ago. I used a 10mm deep socket (a regular socket would probably work-I just have too many tools) to get the nuts off that hold the coil packs in. and also if you have to take the coolant resevoir off, they are also 10mm.

For the plugs make sure you use a plug socket (5/8") with the rubber inserts so the plugs will come out easier. I used a 12" extention with a 6" extension plugged on top of it and the flex plug socket to get more swing room for the ratchet on the last two passenger side plugs. Also a "flex" plug socket on the one closest to the firewall but you could do without it. I just used 12" extention on the rest.

The plugs were actually easier than I thought, as I never changed plugs that had coil packs on top of them before. I put a little "anti sieze" on the plug threads (old habit) and when putting them in once they start to get tight, just a quarter turn more is enough. I put a tiny little bit of lubricant on the o-ring seal on the bottom of the coil pack to make it slide back in and seal easier.

I havn't done the other things you mentioned except for the oil changes.

buy one of the basic mechanics tool sets from sears. usually come in nice cases, and the tools are guaranteed for life. for general use they are more than capable. you can usually find sales on them as well, look for anything from about 80 pieces and up and you will be set. these also come with specific spark plug sockets

all of the services you mentioned can be done with a basic kit. they arent as much as you think, and are worth it. you will end up spending more if you piece it together with bits and ratchets.

plugs, transmission, and coolant are easy, basic sockets. the draincock just use a adjustable wrench to open.
