Hi

Not long ago my 2005 renegade started ticking/clicking at the from left, I lifted the car then turned the wheel and could here the tick/click comming from around the transfer case area. I thought it was the joint connecting the transfer case to the front drive shaft, i took it to have it looked at by a mechanic they said it was the transfer case because there was too much free play in the front drive shaft. After this I went to a transmission expert, at this time the tick/click had gone away and so he couldn't tell me what was wrong with it. He also said because the 4X4 selections are not electronic there should be some free play in the front drive shaft.

Does anyone know what is happening with it?

Your original diagnosis is probably correct - the CV joint at the transfer case end of the front driveshaft is known to go bad. The boot wears away and dirt and grime get into the joint and destroy it. Clicking, ticking sounds are usually what is heard first, though some folks hear popping, groaning sounds too.

It is a rather easy repair that does NOT require a completely new driveshaft, though many shops including the dealer will tell you that. There is a company in Miami that sells the CV joint for $55US plus shipping, and they may ship Down Under to you as well. Check them out:

EDIT: The dropped the price again! Now down to $52US - nice!

There are many other sources for that part - many of us on this board have used them and they've treated us well.

I'll throw my two cents in hear and say I agree with this. Check it for yourself!

Currently, my boot is shot. I'll post up pictures of what it looks like. Essentially...my boot LOOKS good from afar. Just dirty. That's cause all of the grease escaped. Upon sticking my finger in the joint, I felt a tear, and I felt lots of grease.

Throw a picture of your joint up here and we'll help you out!
