Steering rack bushings and misc stuff

What is the best brand of rack bushings to get? Planning on getting the Napa reman rack (feel free to critique that).

Also, I need to replace that one line that is known for leaking. Don't know what it's called other than that. :happy175: Comes out of the reservoir. What do I search for with that? And replacing the o rings in all the other fittings...needed? Can I just get them at Napa or are they special?

I think you are talking about the high pressure line? I got an Edelman from amazon for 23$ .

I had issues with the aftermarket o-rings leaking shortly after replacing the high pressure hose on my KJ. I replaced the aftermarket with new oem o-rings and haven't had an issue since. I'd use new oem o-rings and trash the aftermarket ones. Don't forget about the pressure sensor when you order your hose, I had to figure that out the hard way as well.

As far as the rack bushings go, I went with moog from rockauto. It's been around 2.5 yrs and when I had the rack out a couple weeks ago I looked them over and didn't notice any wear or damage.

I just replaced the rack on mine just under 2 weeks ago. Got it from Detroit Axle on ebay. Cost $166, free shipping, lifetime warranty. Had it in 2-3 days. Anyway, it came with new bushings and o-rings.

I would assume that the NAPA one would come with the bushings also.

So far so good. Time will tell as it's only been about 2 weeks.

The install only took 4 hours on my own. That includes 30-45 minutes trying to get the hard lines reattached. Found out the first thread was mashed over on one and that's why it wouldn't start threading in, so I used the old line.

I was able to wiggle/twist it out through the right wheel well as stated in the write up.

Removed the wheels. outer tie rods, elec. fan, skid plate, and swaybar. I took the hard lines off the new (reman) one to put it in so they wouldn't get smashed up at all, although I was able to get the old out with them still attached.

Honestly it's a pain in the ass and if I could do it over I'd get a reman rack from advance, with the online discount it'll only be $20 or $30 more. Detroit/Dearborn wants you to pay for a new rack and get reimbursed after they get the faulty one and inspect it. They'll say it was your fault or "user error" and you'll have to go through your card company to get your money back.

IMO Detroit/Dearborn is junk and the parts are poor quality, and the customer service is horrible. It'***** or miss and there's a good chance you'll end up with a new boat anchor. I bought a rack, cv's, wheel bearings, and front driveshaft from them for my KJ and none of it lasted 10k miles. Hell one of the hubs was bad right out of the box.

I only put about 5k miles on the replacement rack they sent me before I decided to rebuild it myself. All the bearings were completely shot. Here's a pic of one of the pinion bearings that was missing a few ball bearings

Well :favorites68: Maybe it'll last a bit. Only got the KJ for winter and some offroad fun every now and then. Got a '14 Maxima for normal DD.

Sounds good. I'm betting the Napa one is a Cardone reman.

Seems like it's pretty hit and miss with any of them, guess I'd rather get one that's easier to warranty and is likely a bit less of a risk quality wise.

How many Mopar o rings should I get?

Mine came with 2 for the rack side. I don't know if there are o-rings on the pump side or not.

1 on the high side line on the pump.
1 for the pressure sensor
2 on the rack.
