Hi All,

I am thinking about fitting some spot lights to my Jeep but not sure whether to go for 2 on the front or 4 on the roof on a home made light bar. Just wondering if anyone knows how thick the metal is under the front bumper cover? I read on here ages ago that the KJ has 2 holes already under the bumper cover that you can see from underneath via the towing hook apertures but mine hasn't got any holes in it. I don't want to drill through the bumper cover and metal to find it is really thin and the lights end up wobbling around. I don't mind the drilling but don't want to end up with holes in the cover if the metal underneath is too thin to securely mount the lights. Not sure why mine doesn't have the holes. Are the holes only on the later models? Mine is an 02. Thanks Guys. Steve :smokin:

Hello Banditsteve, I will let others who have mounted the round lights into bumper comment on that aspect. From your small photo it appears you may not have fog lights though. Do you have fogs installed? If not, I would start buy getting the dealer fogs, which I believe also comes with the multi-function switch and then upgrade both your headlight bulbs and fog bulbs. In my KJ I use PIAA extreme white plus and in the fogs, I used 20 watt more powerful 9005ST in silverstars. The lighting produced from both the fogs and headlights now is considerably upgraded, and very good..just something else to consider.

BY the way I have tested a distant roadway with a single round flood 100watt and from the bumper area to the top of hood (higher up) produced way better distance illumination.
So more lights I think for distance work better from a higher advantage point, and many mount them to a roof basket.

Thanks for the reply Matey. Yes you are correct, I don't have front fogs fitted but its driving lights I am after, not fogs. They take a dim view (no pun intended) over here about using fog lights if it's not foggy. Already got upgraded bulbs in headlamps but don't want the 100 watt ones in as in my opinion they don't seem to give out much more usable light, you just get a lot of glare from them. And also a bit concerned about the extra heat generated in plastic lights, hence going the extra light route. Just need to be assured that the metal under the bumper cover is thick enough to "rigidly" mount spots without them wobbling around. Somebody will chip in cos there are plenty of you out there with lights on the bumper. Thanx again, Steve :smokin:

Hey there Steve.

I agree that upgrading your stock bulbs to something cleaner if not brighter is a good start. In my Libby I have Noykia Artic Blue bulbs. They aren't any brighter but they look brighter because of the colour.

Before you put any lightbars on your roof you might want to check the local laws in your area. Here where I live it's illegal to mount more than four forward facing lights and they can't be over 48" above the road.

Do you have the stock foglamps on your Libby Steve? I find they make a big difference lighting up the road directly in front.

You could try mounting a pair of lamps like I did on the grille;

I point these Hella700FF's towards the shoulder of the road to watch for roadkill.

They don't require drilling and surprisingly they don't bounce about.

Hey Randy, See above re fog lights. Posted at the same time as you did. hehe. Yes we have some ridiculous laws over here but thankfully not regarding the lights on the roof. I should be thankful for small mercies I suppose. I would prefer the lights on the roof but for ease and to keep the cost down, I am leaning towards 2 on the front. Thanx for your reply Matey, Steve :smokin:

Just wanted to bump this one up again. Decided to go with the 2 spots on the front as I have looked into the lighting laws over here and no roof mounted lights allowed if they are located behind the front axle! Hence trucks are ok to have them fitted but thats about it. Just want to know if the mounting holes are there on the 02 models as I can't see any. been underneath and there doesn't seem to be any there. If anyone has any photos of their lights bumper mounted, that would be good too? Cheers Guys. :smokin:

Steve - did you get a light-bar like the one in the last photo in the UK?

I'm thinking about doing the same with my KJ, hence finding this thread, I want to up-grade the headlight bulbs too, but I like the look of that light-bar!
