small tube going into stock AIR INTAKE BOX?

Hey guys,

newbie here

Installed a RAM AIR intake system on my wife 2004 jeep liberty v6 4x4

Only one problem, when I removed the stock air box, there was a smaller hose connected to the side of it that ran into a peice of FOAM like material in the stock intake box. What is this for?

There is no hook up for it on my ram air system, so I just plugged it with FOAM as I assumed leaving it hanging and open would create a vacumm leak.

So basically my problem is, I am left with a small tube that was connected to the air box, that now has no where to connect to anymore. As I said, I took the "foam" out of the side of the stock air box and put that into the tube termporaily until I figure out if I should leave it wide open, closed, or maybe install one of those "vent" filters(the tiny ones from autozone).

Please help

That hose is for the crankcase vent (PCV Valve)... the foam is used to keep oil out of the airbox and back into your intake.

So should I put one of those mini "air filter" like things from autozone on it or just remove the foam and leave it open?

Right now its "plugged" with the foam pushed into the tube, but I assume thats not the correct thing to do, unless air can pass through it, but I doubt it.

What brand of 'ram air' did you get?

Im not sure if the vacuum inside of the stock air box is what pulled the air out of the vacuum hose it what. Putting a filter on it and leaving it like it is now may be ok.

i put a filter from one of my nitro rc cars on the pcv valve been working just fine for many months now.

I just put one of those autozone mini breather's on it. I used a K & N air filter onto the stock 4" air pipe.

Did it for gas mileage, and WOW makes a huge difference, went from 17mpg 100% city driving to 20.4 . I'm loving it, my wife does drive like an old man though and uses "hypermiling" techniques.

Sounds good.

I got 13mpg on the last tank of nothing but city.. Thought that was pretty good myself.

We were getting about 12 before she learned how to "coast in neutral" which took us to 14-15mpg, and then we started "killing it at long stoplights", that gain another 1-2mpg. We don't do any of that dumb **** "hypermiling" like rolling with the engine turn off or other non-sense.

Overall I'm really happy with the mod, engine is slightly louder, but sounds mean as hell when you need to make it GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Cost about $40, I'd highly recommend it, AS LONG as you drive normally, you will be inclined to drive like a bat out of hell b/c that v6 really houls now esp when you take it out of overdrive.

Acutally, the PCV valve is rendered useless unless it's connected to vacuum in someway(usually the intake). The small filter you're talking about is used to filter out the oil mist that is produced in the crankcase.

The positive crankcase ventilation valve is a one way check valve put in place to draw noxious gases out of the crankcase and to create a negative pressure in the crankcase.

Without a PCV valve in place it's possible to have a positive pressure situation in the crankcase caused by piston ring blow by. This positve pressure situation can cause gasket and oil seal leaks.

Also, without the PCV valve in place to draw out the noxious gases your oil life may be shortened.
