How would you know to add fluid 'as needed' as stipulated in the schedule B of the maintenance handbook?

Also, anyone know, off hand, the allen wrench size for the fill and drain plugs on the transfer cases?

While we're on the subject of my Jeep's bodily fluids, I have two other questions. First, there's a bit of weeping from the rubber plug on the rear axle gear housing. Could this be solved with a new plug? Then there's the matter of the 5W-20 oil a local dealership used when doing an oil change. I had it over there for a state inspection and in a weak moment asked them to change the oil as well. The manual stipulates 5W-30. Is the oil they used insufficiently viscous? It's still summer here in NH.

5W20 is what they spec for 07+ 3.7s for 1/100 of a mile better MPG. My 09 WK came with 5W20 but I switched it to 5W30.

Won't kill it for one oil change, but next one do 5w30.

5-20 is what the newer 3.7L's are spec'd to. It'll be fine for the OCI, so no worries there.

Yes replacing the rubber plug should help but most axles will show a slight moisture around the plug at some point in their life. Rubber dries up and does not provide the secure seal that it used to.

Around 99,600 miles. On the receipt: 5 qts 5W20 oil. Called the dealership and the parts guy says, and I'm not making this up, 5W-20's better for the summer. Serves me right. I should have don it myself.

That's silly!

Again you'll be fine for this OCI. I just wouldn't run 5 20 for the rest of the Jeep's life.

IMO, High millage needs a High Millage oil! If you dont change your oil, you dont really know what they actually put in!!

5w 20 is not for you! maybe as a flush only!

they must have loaded up on the winter blend or maybe just what the New cars use.

with the Plug, is it possible the unit is over filled? or maybe the vent is clogged? does the axle get real hot after a highway drive (yea, check the temp after a long drive)?

Not really possible since it would be coming out as fast as you pour it in there

I have never used high mileage oil, have ran numerous Jeeps. Fords, GMCs up into the 275-300,000 mile range on the regular oil that you use on every vehicle. None ever used any either but bought them new, did oil changes when they should of been done and kept going.
Agree that I would not run 5-20 although many run that oil trying to squeeze out that 1/100 of a mile per gallon more

when I say High Millage oil what I mean to say is use 10w30, 10w40, 20w50 instead of 5w20. Depending on the engine & millage & outside temps. it also helps quiet noisy engines. but its just my opinion (IMO)

I put 10W-30 in mine a month ago and drained it back out for 5W-30 800 miles later. Things just didn't feel right. No way I would put 10W-40 in there.
