I bought my KJ without the rear bumper steppads, i didnt even notice they were not there til i got home, but now i was looking at getting a set of used, but was told the clips that hold it into the rear bumper are built in to the steppads and once they are taken out of the original bumper they will not go back into a new bumper?
Is this how is it, or does it clip in differently?
Thanks!

If you are talking about the black plastic cover that snaps onto the top of the rear bumper cover - than your best bet is to buy a new one instead of trying to scrounge up a used one that still has good clips.

Or as an alternative you can buy some sticky grip tape (i.e. skateboard grip tape) and cut that to fit over the top of your bumper cover. Cheaper and more functional in terms of grippy-ness than the smooth plastic piece.

The top step pads or whatever they're called are two pieces (left & right). I removed the right side not long ago and broke two push-in clips. I ended up using Gorilla (Gel) Super glue which has proven to work well. Anyway, I went to a couple of different online Jeep (dealer) sites to price them. For a '02, the right side was like $130.00 and the left side something like $90.00

Yeah i got a quote for $85 for each side new, but got a used set for $50 shipped, it is missing a couple clips but i plan to use the remaining clips and epoxy it, definitely worth the money saved! :D

Those step pads suck anyway, they don't stay solidly in place when you step ON them. That's probably how the clips break in the first place; step on them, they slide, and SNAP... Maybe remove them, and put a thick coat of bed-liner on instead?

I was thinking some black-anodized diamond plate would look cool on there myself. (My Jeep being black and all).

Just a thought :)

I think that would look pretty trick Dave.
A unique one of a kind custom mod indeed!

I wonder just how many other KJ owners
will use your idea in the near future?

Cheers
Ry'

Well, the plot thickens... I went out to look at it last night (in the dark, of course!), and noticed that the right-side plastic step pad was a bit lose. In trying to look to see what was under it, it popped off completely!

I had an accident a while back and the body shop replaced the bumper skin, and if I recall correctly they re-used the step pads and just replaced the bumper. (I was paying, not insurance).

So they glued them back on with some black goop, which is now letting go.

So now I have even more incentive!

Looking at it, I think I could leave them off completely and put the Diamond plate in their place - I was originally thinking it could go on top of them.

I think it would be cool to wrap the diamond plate over the edge like the originals do, but there is a slight curve so that could be tricky! I'm not particularily skilled nor do I have any equipment for this kind of metal working but I know aluminum is pretty easy to work with...

OK have I gone on long enough? I'll take a couple of pics in a bit and post them up.

Cheers,

Dave

Well seeing that you paid for the repair, the first thing I'd do is go back to the company that did the work and get some money refunded for their lack of quality workmanship!
With that said, you can buy a pretty decent metal brake from Princess Auto and then you will have the equipment to make the bends in the aluminium checker plate!
(Not to mention you can use the brake for other custom bits and bobs for your truck!)

Yeah I hear you there!

Now you've got me going down that slippery slope... brake today, next I'll be wanting a welder... pipe bender... haha

I already have a pretty much fully equipped and overcrowded wood shop, I'll have nowhere to put all this automotive gadgetry!!!

I think I'll stop by Princess Auto on my way home tomorrow... haven't been there in a while anyways!

Maybe they sell diamond plate...
