I was driving home from work and while on the highway the A/C started blowing warm air and then once I got off the highway it started blowing cold air again. But after wards there was a burnt rubber type of smell that I could smell in the engine bay and inside the vehicle.

The temperature is about 100 outside. But I also drove about 40 miles or so and it didn't happen. Is there any way to narrow down what this may be?

I would bet your a/c clutch, mine just went out last week, started by making alot of noise, then burned plastic smell, then no cold/ a/c cluch not engaging, all with in 2 weeks of the first noise from the bearings
easy way to check, is turn the jeep on turn the a/c on, ope,n the hood, the cluch infront of the ac cluch should click on and be spinning with the belt, if not, that could be your problem
any noise?

Not sure if that's it, there was never any sound prior to this happening. And I was looking under the hood and everything seemed to be spinning fine. Plus after it sat a little while the A/C was running really cold when I started it.

Burnt rubber smell was probably the serpentine belt slipping, could have been due to the A/C could have been due to something else.

When was the last time you replaced your Serpentine Belt and Tensioner assembly?
