OK I have an 03 Jeep Liberty that I've done a lot of restoration to. I've leaned on Crutchfield for radio and speaker fixes and upgrades. (No, I don't own any of their stock and they don't pay me)

Early on after I bought it used I checked the speakers and found the rubber surrounding the speaker cones had dried out and disappeared, so I found a kit only (eBay, I think) that allowed me to replace the disintegrated rubber. That worked just fine for several years. Over time I replaced the factory head unit with a double DIN Pioneer that played CDs, had GPS, and supported a backup camera. Then a few months ago the rear door speaker on the passenger side started with crackling sounds. I figured that it must be the speakers had aged out. The car has 280,000 miles and is an '03. So I bought a new set of speakers from Crutchfield. I found the fronts came with an amp that was held on to the speaker with bolts. The Crutchfield kit had you remove the amp and Velcro it to the lower metal part of the door so the wiring could still reach to plug into the amp as well as extend the two wires to the speaker itself. I replaced all four speakers and still had the crackle.

Very frustrating I checked all the wiring and everything checked fine. Still the crackle.

I researched recalls and found that there had been a problem with speaker crackle that would last a few seconds and they replaced the wiring connector. My crackle lasted far longer and my connectors and wiring checked out. Then I realized that the amp on the front speakers wasn't just for the fronts but also amped the rear door speakers. Aha! So I went to LKQ (pick-a-part) and pulled front speakers from a Liberty there and also included the amps. For $12 each. Then I took the speaker on the right front back out of my Liberty and swapped the amp with one from LKQ.

Problem solved! No more crackle.
