Got an e-mail from a CRD friend up in Charlotte this morning.
He'd found a thread on one of the Jeep forums where a gent with an 05 KJ had purchased a used front diff out of an older KJ, had it rebuilt with 4.10 gears, and installed in his 05.
What's interesting is that the diff rebuild shop told him that the older front diff had torrington bearings - while in the front diff out of his 05, instead of torrington bearings, it had plastic sleeves/bushings!!!
WTH? Has anyone else ran across this?
I went thru some similar nonsense several years ago with my mother's 92 Mustang convertible, having to have the AOD ****** in it rebuilt because Ford had used plastic bushings instead of bearings inside it.
IMHO, there's at least two places where you shouldn't use plastic bushings instead of proper bearings - inside a ****** or differential.:disgust:
I've still got the front driveshaft pulled out of my 05 CRD, from troubleshooting my driveline noise - since fixed, turned out to be a bad drivers side carrier bearing in the rear diff. I was already looking at getting the rebuild kits and replacing the CV joints on it.
But if the above is true, it looks like before I even think about reinstalling that front driveshaft, that another trip to the diff shop to have that front diff redone with proper bearings is in order.
