New here and having timing issues

My son bought a 2005 liberty with the 2.8crd. 205k miles. So we decided to put a timing belt and water pump in. Bought the pins had everything lined up put the belt on pulled pins and he started it but the tensioner wasn’t tight and think the timing slipped. So I’ve pulled injectors and made sure to find tdc then rotate 90 degrees. Rotated cams around to get the pins in. Pulled gears and verified the key ways in the cams point inward towards each other. Rotate the engine over by hand to ensure nothing hits. But it won’t start. It will hit and fire but won’t run. Am I missing something in the timing or do I need to pull the cam carrier and inspect valves and rocker arms? Thank you for any help.

It can be a chore to get all the air out of the fuel system once it's been open. You might have issues with that?

Were all wiring connections fully reconnected?

When you pinned the motor, did you include the pin at the flywheel? My understanding is a person could still be 180 degrees off from the 90 deg past TDC with just the cam pins in place.

Sorry guys I’ve been working out of state so haven’t had time to think about this. I didn’t crack all the injector lines but I had fuel to the rail. I did pin the flywheel but seemed to have more play than I feel like maybe should. I did check all the wiring. Even tried it with the air box lid back on and the maf sensor and inlet temp plugged in.

The only other thing I can think of is making sure the water-in-fuel filter is tight and that the air has been bled out of the filter head when you prime the fuel system.

Ok guys. Thanks for the help. I’ll verify the fuel system is bled and get back to you. Will be a week or so before I have time.
