The check engine light went on in my Liberty. Naturally I immediately checked the gas cap and it was loose. But even after three clicks it was still loose. So I bought a new gas cap. Same problem; three clicks and it's still loose. I'm stumped.

Sounds like you might have an evap leak somewhere. Get it smoke tested

But why would the cap remain loose even after tightening it three clicks?

Loose in what manner? Does it wobble side to side?
Check the rubber sealing washer to be present and not compressed.
It should look like this...

If the cap was not the fix. Then start with the purge solenoid. But when I had this issue. It was the EVAP leak detection pump. Hope that this information helps you out.:happy160:

Ok, I started it up today and no check engine light. By the way, when I said it was loose, I mean turning it three clicks didn't tighten it. Not side to side, but circularly.

You can crank that think forever, if you want to, at least I can on my 2007.

I had the same thing happen a couple months ago, except in my case it actually said "loose gas cap" on the dash. It took me a couple times of removing/replacing it but it finally went out and stayed out. I blame the Kardashians. :mexsmoke:

My stock gas cap also doesn't like to stay tight, its caused a check engine light before. If you tighten it, then try to loosen it, its as if it was never tight at all. Just comes right back off.

If I put some weight into it when tightening it, it seems to stay tight.
