So I was sitting home this afternoon, drinking a couple beers when I thought about trading in my 2002 Stock KJ, in excellent condition. Only thing is has 150k on it. I wanted to check out the wranglers. Would love to drive around with doors off and top off. Has anyone else switched?

I just like the feeling of it being a little bit more sporty than the luxurious liberty.

I have both a TJ and a KJ
TJ is more fun KJ is better for the daily grind
TJ is 7+ years old and around 47K
KJ is not quite 7 and 65K
a TJ with a hard top is much better on road but taking the top off is a PITA
TJ with good tires and a soft top would not be bad for a 10-15 mile DD

I drove the TJ on swampers for a 700 mile one way drive NEVER again

Your KJ will have no value as a trade (too old, too many miles); you best bet would be to sell it private party. A dealer might offer $500 as a trade.

Just for them to turn around and sell it for about $6-7000.

Please, for the love of God, sell it private party if you must.

It's sad... I say most car dealership profits come from exactly those. (older, higher mileage trade-ins)

The best bet would be to check KBB or something and price it and go to all the jeep boards and CL and see if you get any takers......just thinking.

Otherwise no dealer will give you much. When people look at used the first thing they look/ask is "how many miles on it" ......because at that point with a used vehicle you are buying mileage......ie, "how many miles can I get out of it".

Or just keep it. (even as a second vehicle) It probably has a lot of miles left in it. I am in the same spot with my other car. It is 10 years old with 152,000 on it but runs good and gets 30mpg. (99 Cutlass) Still looks good.

Personally I would keep the KJ and pick up a new vehicle. I know you said you were only thinking about it at this point but my opinion is: The KJ's paid for so you might as well drive it until it is non-repairable and get your moneys worth out of the vehicle.

If insurance rates suck where he lives as much as it does here in NY, keeping a car that won't be driven on a daily basis is worst than trading it in for slightly less than its worth. Oh yeah, it should make at least $5k privately. I have never seen a high mileage jeep that runs clean and does not have history of serious accidents/damages go any less than $5k.

It's pretty clear their profits aren't coming from new sales.

Oh don't think that dealerships don't make a profit on new car sales. No dealership will sell a car unless they make a profit on it. But as far as HUGE profits, those will always come from

1. Used Car Sales
2. Service/Repairs (HUGE profits)
3. Parts
4. Rental Cars
5. Quick Lube spots that some dealers have.
