I've done some reading. I've done some wrenching. Still, P0456

I'm familiar with purge solenoids, charcoal canisters, evaporative emissions and am fairly car smart.

Here's what I've done, in vain:
Bought an 07 auto / gas KJ
Put some miles on it. (we're up to 70k now)

Got a P0456 code.

Cleared it in vain as it came back.

Changed gas cap for new in vain as it came back.

Looked around the hoses under the floor in front of the gas tank, going to and from the char-canister in vain; nothing is cracked. I did hose-clamp the two soft rubber ones going to/from the char-can.

Failed at locating an online source of AllData or the like.

Removed the underhood purge sol.; verified no cracking at the bi-connector rubber.

Contacted a bad ***** of a tech who knows more than I do who recommended checking the purge-sol, then the Leak Detection Pump

Tested the purge-sol to make sure it doesn't allow vaccuum from the air-cleaner ducting (anyone who calls anything an "intake" that's not a manifold might dance ballet and that's all I'm sayin' :badger_1: ) ... It doesn't.

Pulled down the char-can (and thank goodness it gets a skid plate but we gotta pay extra for the eng/trans/t-case to not get scraped off :smokin: ) and it's cool.

Soooooooooooooooo Is the doo-hickey in the char-can the LDP? Based on this: LDP (leak detection pump) location in 07 KJ - JeepForum.com it is, which differs from earlier years. I see in http://www.berrysprinter.com/e-fiche/model years/cd5/06-09/07kj.pdf it's PN 04891685AA

Any sources besides dealer? I tend to get antsy to get stuff done at night.:yawn:

I typed all this out because I'm feeling :favorites68: but not p: until Monday when the smog check is officially due. :whip:

char-can + pump 270012 @ a-zone. Nothing in stock this late. Napa looks like they carry the same thing for less @ CRB 270012. CarQuest 73-10397. So I'll see how things pan out in the AM.

My first thought, which was confirmed by searching the forum with your CEL code, was the evap leak at the rear of the Jeep. There's a line that gets a crack in it. You'll probably be able to find pics and everything, but here's a quick link that discusses it.

What gas cap did you get. Non mopar ones are junk and don't work usually.

It's had a new Mopar and a Stant cap.
The line pointed out isn't damaged.
It wasn't looking good for finding an aftermarket vapor canister / LDP today.
But my local dealer had the LDP in stock which was a good cost savings. It's installed now.

As for the googling my pretty little heart out thing.... there's no way I would have come to search the phrase you suggested based upon the history of having only the P0456 and read only threads resulting in a search for the same.

The P0443 didn't show up in the past; just P0456. But today, it had both. Now, had I previously searched P0442 or P0443, I'd have had a more fighting chance in my estimation.

The codes are cleared via a code reader. Hopefully A - they don't come back. And B - the "obd-ii not ready" thing doesn't prevent a smog test today or tomorrow.

Sorry. In hindsight that may have come off a bit rash. Anywho...I came across both of those links searching the forum and google with only the P0456 code.

I actually didn't realize you had the other code as well. I'd start checking the evap lines for cracks as that's probably your culprit.

Other than minor commute duty yesterday, I also put 100 or so miles on last night for the sake of hopefully having the OBD system ready for the test.

And it passed OBD-II, scan-only this morning.

A week ago, we had a "gas cap not ready" message for a couple days.
Then, it went away.
Still sporting the no-removal-needed-to-gas-up Stant.

Had a detail done on it a few weeks ago.
Getting closer to 80k.

Nothing to contribute here other than Stant gas caps are trash. Had issues multiple times and have ended back up with oem.

Can always find possible leaks in any vacuum system by spraying a little brake cleaner in any areas that are possible suspects while the jeep is running. It'll stall it out and help you close in on any problems! Glad you found the issue!

Doesn't work for the EVAP system.

I too have this 0456 code that won't go away. Happened after I had the fuel pump replaced at the dealer. 2 weeks after they replaced it the light came on. Drove with it for a few days. Read the code and cleared it. Week later came back same code, took it the same dealer.

They did the smoke test on the entire jeep and not a leak could be found. Tried again the next day and still no leak found. So they come to find the purge solenoid valve was bad. Replaced that. Week later light was back on, same code again. Cleared it and it came back a week later.

Installed new mopar gas cap and cleared code. Week later came back same code. Had a mechanic buddy look it over did another smoke test and nothing again. Cleared code and week later it was back. Been on for about 10 weeks now. Still runs great with no issues or loss in mpg.

Any thought and what to do now? After I been driving I can smell gas fumes every once in awhile near the rear of the jeep.

Check the leak detection pump.Disconnect the large hose off of it,key on/engine off and ground the purple(or green,been awhile) then use a vacuum pump.It should hold vacuum,if not replace the pump.Common failure point on a KJ with evap codes.

thanks for the suggestion! Is the ldp in the charcoal canister or no? Never been under the back of my kj just the front.

06 sport 3.7 if that matters. Another friend suggested that purge solenoid valve could have been bad even though it was new dealer stock. Checked all the lines from the valve to the firewall and they looked good
