Has anyone switched to DOT4 Brake Fluid?

Last year one of my cars had a frozen brake line with DOT3.

It's what I've been using for about 9 years in the KJ, and the last 30 years in other cars and bikes. It will mix, but its better to do a complete flush and replace. Apparently you can also mix DOT5.1 (NOT DOT5), but I've never really looked at that - partly the expense and partly the relative rarity.

DOT3 fluid froze? Hmm.. well, since it's an oil, it doesn't really "freeze", but just congeals and gets too thick to flow.

DOT3 is good down to at least -30F, usually -45F. I'm sure it never gets that low in NY. Are you sure you didnt have another problem?

I use DOT 3 also. One thing to note is Brake Fluid will absorb moisture. Combine a little water in the system with a corroded brake line and it could cause a blockage.

If you change your brake fluid regularly it shouldn't be a problem. The only ones that I have seen have problems are vehicles that have never had the fluid changed.
