Got a free Liberty, what next

Got a free 02, 4x4. In good shape, except the engine. Was told it is bad, i priced them and they are very expensive for very high milage ones. I started it, and it had a ticking sound, didn't sound like a rod, more like a fifter or something. Anyways, it went away after about 5-6 seconds, and sounded perfectly normal. Is there something else wrong with it, or is it the first sign the engine is going bad? Any help would be great, thanks

Normal on HJ's rig, as he may have used wax instead of oil by accident!
If it sounded like valve train it probably is. The valve spring may have sprung!
If you can identify which side it is coming from, pull the valve cover & inspect.
How many miles on engine?

IF the engine isn't junk, do some maintenance and have fun. If it is junk, this is a golden opportunity to figure out how to put a 4.7 in it.

It was my cousins, I could choose from that or an 00 ssei bonneville that also needed a motor. I though the 3.7 would be cheaper to replace, but looks like it isn't. I got the sending unit out (wow, what a job), just got to get a new one in try it.
