on a recent trip back from florida we were about 3 hours into the trip back. it was almost 100 degrees and we stopped for gas.

i usually turn the engine off when fueling but since our baby was in the jeep i kept it running with the ac going. while i was about 10 gallons into the refueling process, i stepped to the rear of the jeep to look at both sides of the tires to make sure all was well. while doing so the engine revved to about 1500 rpms and a small bit of black smoke came out of the tail pipe. the engine revved by itself! my wife was in the back seat with the baby so i know for sure it wasnt her messing with me.

a few hours later we stopped for gas again and the same thing happened only this time with no black smoke.

what caused this? ive never had an issue with anything on this jeep and it now has 81k on it. other than that freak 2 times, its always ran perfect and still did afterwards. ive not tried to re create it, but was just curious if the ac/heat/fuel cap being off, had anything to do with it??

anyone??

Usually running the engine while the gas cap is off can cause problems b/c the tank pressurizes for the fuel pump to work properly.

Some one stole my gas cap on my work van a few months ago. It had a fuel tank when it happened so I didn't know right away but once the tank was half empty the gas cap light came on and i started having engine problems with odd engine revs. Once i got a new cap. No problems.
