So, I have the tow package on my KJ - that gives me a 5,000 lb tow limit. TJ with Auto is rated at 3,400 or so curb.

My buddy and I found a TJ that could be a potential business venture for us; it's got a wrecked trans and can't be driven. I found a tow bar rated at 5,000 lbs at Harbor Freight (and I can use this for my Austin Healey, so I figure it's worth the cost). With this tow bar, I'd be flat towing it.

I'd be towing the TJ around 50-75 miles. Maybe some hills, but nothing crazy at all. I'd definitely be locking out OD and taking it easy. Also, it's about 20* here, so I think that'll help with trans cooling. ;)

Think this would be OK? Is this really ******* the KJ? I don't mind using it as long as it's not too rough on the vehicle as it's a daily driver that I purchased and will be holding onto for a long time.

You should be fine. The KJ will tow 3,500 pounds easy. Like you said, just take it easy and lock out O/D. Stopping is just harder so take it easy.

Thanks for the reassurance Dave. Just want to make sure I don't trash a perfectly good vehicle/transmission by trying to make a few extra bucks ;)

No worries on stopping - if the deal goes down, it'd be transported on a Sat in a decently rural area. No need to rush with it, and no need to be in any kind of traffic.

^^^The KJ will tow the 3,500 lb TJ just fine. You'll see.

You won't hurt it pulling the weight. You just need a longer distance to stop and locking out O/d will let the ****** run cooler and give you a little engine brakeing.
