So my 04 liberty 3.7l is making a terrible noise. I removed the belt and started the engine and the noise was not present, just some valvetrain clicking. With the belt on it makes a strange grinding knocking sound. It sounded like the alternator so I replaced it and no go, still the same noise. Here is a video of what it's doing. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sBEr2efHv0M

it is the serpentine belt tensioner assembly. not the wheels, but the entre assembly.

It sounds like its coming from the top of the engine, and the tensioner pulley isn't shaking.... I guess I'll slap one of those in there and see what happens.

Just because it's not visibly shakng doesn't mean it's not bad.

you isolated the issue to being serpentine related. That's the most common thing. You could buy one, put it on, find out if it fixes the issue, and return it if not.

Next likeliest thing is a/c pump

Ok I'll see what it does with a new one. The a/c blows nice and cold, the pulley was tight with no play or grinding in it when I had the belt off. Thank you, I'll report back.

NOT the tensioner. Making a hell of a racket, spraying a fine mist of oil out from arou d the water pump area.....

My guess would be the water pump then. My first reaction was the tensioner but if it's replacement didn't cure the noise then the only two components left that are turned by the belt are the A/C compressor and the water pump. Personally I prefer the replacement price of the water pump over the AC :shakehead:

It is most certainly the water pump! I can grab the hd fan and wiggle the water pump pulley side to side about a 3/4". Why would there be an oily residue coming off of it? And how do I get the fans and shroud off to work on this beast?

Could be the bearings blown on the water pump and the coolant mixed with the bearings causing the oily residue. maybe

as far as replacing it that part is simple. I didn't deal with shroud/fan or anything when I did mine though.

To get the shroud off you first have to remove the mechanical fan and it's clutch from the front of the water pump. You need a "spanner wrench" (rental from an auto parts store) that fits Chrysler engines and a small bolt that will fit through one of the holes in the pump pulley. Put the bolt through the pulley so it engages one of the fins behind the pulley, put on the spanner wrench and give it a good counter-clockwise hit to loosen it. Then unscrew it most of the way but not all the way off.

Next, disconnect the fan wiring on the top of the shroud. Remove the two bolts on the top right and left of the shroud; completely unscrew the clutch from the nose of the water pump then lift out the shroud and fan as a unit.

There are about 7 or 8 bolts that hold the water pump to the timing cover. Remove those, take out the old pump and reverse everything to put it all back together.

I had to borrow a 36mm wrench from autozone. My clutch nut was not corroded on there, quite simple to remove actually. I put some anti seize on the new one just in case I'm ever back in there. The water pump shaft bearings had given up the ghost bad. And whoever worked on this before me put the green coolant in there. I found zerex g-05 at napa. Even the dealership had no clue what hoat coolant was. Kinda makes you wonder what they are doing to customer vehicles.....

All in all, my jeep now happily has a new water pump and a clean full of the correct coolant! And it doesn't make that awful sound anymore.

Thanks everyone!!! I appreciate the replies. I always work on my own vehicles, the satisfaction I get from not spending five times more at the dealer is thanks enough. I was surprised that the dealer did not know what hoat coolant was. Needless to say thank you for the posts previous to mine about water pumps and other engine issues. The help provided on the forum is great!!!

The jeep is so quiet now I have to check the rpm gauge to make sure it's running

Any tips on getting a better brake pedal?
