As soon as I crank it up, sounds like the fan is engaging and stays like that till shut down. The temp gage climbs rapidly to half way, then stays there. The fan turns by hand with engine off. Has tow package, so has electric fan, haven't figured out if that one works yet. I've ordered new rad hoses and thermostat, not because of the fan. It just needs them. Thoughts?

So tow package. Clutch fan and electric fan? A clutch fan it does run ALL the time since it is connected to the waterpump. This is normal and good. If the electric fan runs all the time cold thats probably bad.

Umm, ok. Haven't had a clutch fan in a while. I remember them spinning kinda lackadaisically until the engine getting up to temp, then engaging at full speed. Haven't figured out if the electric one works yet. On the list of shit to do. Thanks

The mechanical one is mounted with à clutch, any weird sound? And the second one (electrical) with a temp sensor. Can you confirm that the electrical one is always turning. This is not normal at idle speed. Is this the same when the air conditioning is at off?

No "weird" sound, but I can hear that it is engage just because of the forceful blown air sound. I haven't seen the electric one come on, but haven't checked it yet. Just bought it used and don't know the maintenance/repair history, so I'm going over it bit by bit before I put it on the road much. It's an 03, 4x4, 3.7, auto.

Ok! Today's episode. Haynes manual said that I should be able to turn the CLUTCH operated fan, by hand when the engine is cool. I can turn it a bunch more than that. Simple clutch replacement or more complicated? Also hot wired the electric fan. Didn't come on. Switched polarity. Still didn't come on. Is there a "known issue" with these?

So if you can spin the fan and it keeps spinning (more than a few turns) the clutch is done. It is recomended to change the water pump and clutch at the same time by hayden.

there's not much of a known issue with the e-rad fan.
It's dead then. Just replace it.

The popular issue is the solid state relay for future reference.

clutch fan replace is very easy.
1. remove shroud w/ e-rad fan.
2. remove clutch fan
3. remove blades
4. install blades to new clutch fan
5. reinstall clutch fan
6. cut a notch on your shroud so you can take the shroud out without removing the clutch fan. (this is optional)
7. install shroud w/ clutch fan
