Greetings, Have a 2005 2.8L CRD making a rattling noise mostly at Idle but on some rpm changes as well.
I suspect the Harmonic Balancer currently. Any tips on inspecting it? pretty tight in there without removing things.
I replaced the tensioner as it was separating, and the alternator decoupler pulley that was seized. I have new idler pulleys yet to install - thought that was issue and discovered the tensioner and alternator thought those were the culprit.
Got just over 205k on this rig, did Timing belt at 175k . Pretty sure this has made this same rattling for the last 50K (got it at 153K). The serpentine belt was really dancing on the fan pulley after the new Tensioner with the bad Alternator pulley. Changing the alternator pulley seems to have taken most of the shifting around on the fan pulley, but the tensioner itself seems to move A LOT very rapidly at idle.

Elastomeric vibration dampers/balncers will eventually wear out as the rubber degrades…if you see any cracking or bulging in the rubber, then it is time to replace the damper.

On my 2005 Dodge Ram witht he Cummind, I was able to install the upgraded viscous damper with minimal effort and trouble from the newer 6.7 CTD which should now last forever.
