Here's an easy way to clean your tires without harsh chemicals that strip your wheels of their protective laquer coating: Brillo pads (inexpensive; works great). Here's some pic's(courtesy Image Shack):
After washing, looks pretty bad still
A little Brillo pad action -- looks like new
A respectable looking wheel!
I don't care much for the "wet" look -- looks like you just drove off the used car lot. \
