ANything less than 10k is gonna be really beat up in jeep 2nd hand world. Maybe 7500 if you are lucky..... otherwise it is not worth it.

Disagree. In 2006, my buddy picked up a '99 Wranger with hard/soft tops that was in great shape for $5200. 132k on it, manual trans, 2.5L. almost 160k and still running like a champ, has needed a few small maintenance items.

He got lucky. Still, Manual, 132k, 2.5
I couldn't find a clean one that was worth buying any less than 9k, anywhere I looked. It might be different out of state, though. A lot of oblivious sellers out there.

He paid about $2000 to much for it also(that TJ was only $12,000 new). You can find better for less, just need to know where to look.

I'm not sure what's wrong with Wrangler resale, but I think it's artificially high. I can't believe dealers still want $18k for '04 Wrangler Unlimiteds and Private Parties don't want much less.

Well first off there is no such thing as a 1996 Wrangler,Jeep never made any Wrangler that where model year '96,went from '95 right to '97(YJ to TJ).That guy is a idiot.

Modding a Jeep(unless totally radical and all custom,in pristine condition) actually lowers the value, not increase it.You lift it-you lose about 25%-40% value, but there are those suckers that will pay those high prices though,so sad.$24,000 for a non-existant '96 Wrangler, even lifted,is a total rip-off,$4000-$5000 is the norm.Heck you can find lifted TJ's here in CO,fully outfitted with ARB lockers and 4:1 t-cases,with 50,000-100,000 miles for about $5000-$7500 and range from '98-'02 model years.

He may NOT be an idiot.

SOME STATES title vehicle model years BY THEIR BUILD DATE. So everyone knows Jeep extended the YJ Wrangler. So the state may have titled it as MY 1996. On another forum, at least two people had '95s titled as '96. Can't remember the state though, that was a long time ago. There may also be some '96 TJs running around since some of those had early build dates too.

So legally, he may be describing a 1996 Wrangler. (Although theoretically no it didn't exist...)

They should be going off the VIN not the build date.My fathers '01 SuperDuty was built March of '02 but the factory screwed up and put a '01 VIN # on it so it had to be sold and titled as a '01.

I completely disagree, at least in this area. You'd be very hard pressed to find one in great condition for that price. Yes, they were around $14k MSRP in 1999, however, the resale here is insane.

I'd also like to add that he's nearing 160k on it now with next to no problems. Just little maintenance items.

But the question is this: Exactly WHY is Wrangler resale in this area so dang high?
